A 20-year-old has been found guilty of possessing a terrorism video showing how to make a bomb, following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, West Midlands Police stated.

Adam Mahmood, of Platt Brook Way, Sheldon, was arrested at his home in April 2024 in connection with disseminating extremist material.

Police said his phone was seized and later found to contain a 15-minute instructional video on making explosives, along with other propaganda including execution footage.

Jurors were told Mahmood had deliberately searched for the video. Officers also discovered messages discussing the construction of a sword, and a part-made sword was found at his home alongside several knives.

In interview, Mahmood admitted writing the online posts and confirmed the weapons were his, though he denied being involved in terrorism.

Detective Chief Superintendent Alison Hurst, head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the West Midlands, said in the release: “Videos found on Mahmood’s phone were dangerous and showed extreme violence. The instructional video was assessed by an expert who considered that the guide was easy to follow even for someone with no previous training in explosive manufacturing and therefore incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands.”

Police urged the public to report any suspicious activity by calling 0800 789 321 in confidence.

  1. Most 1950’s chemistry books told you how to make explosives – with quite easy to follow recipes.

Are counterterrorism police going to form a serial elite squad of ‘highly trained’ officers to seize them and arrest their 90 year old owners – who have probably forgotten they had them!

    • I’m going to imagine that there is probably more to it that having a chemistry book from the 50s the fact he was on the terror polices radar in the first place sends a pretty good signal to that as I don’t think the terror police just go to random peoples houses hoping to stumble on a book from the 50s

      • I was being slightly tongue in cheek.

You could image a parody press conference where a senior officer [talking in proper comedy copper] announces the clearing up of 100’s of potential terrorist incidents. With images of the ‘suspects’ in their zimmer frames and wheel chairs.

    • The “Anarchists Cookbook” used to be offered to me all the time when I was a member, way back in my teens, of a military mail order book club, whose name I now forget.
