Lockheed Martin has announced the successful completion of a long-range flight test of its Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Army at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
According to the company, the test met and exceeded extended-range performance expectations, marking another step forward in the missile’s development programme.
In a press release issued on 24 March 2025, Lockheed Martin stated that the flight demonstrated PrSM’s ability to deliver “game-changing” capability for long-range precision fires.
The missile is being developed to meet the U.S. Army’s requirement for a next-generation surface-to-surface weapon capable of striking targets at distances exceeding 400 km.
“We successfully conducted a second test at Vandenberg Space Force Base to meet the extended range requirement, and PrSM exceeded expectations,” said Carolyn Orzechowski, Vice President of Precision Fires Launchers and Missiles at Lockheed Martin.
“PrSM offers game-changing capability, and we are dedicated to rigorously testing the system to ensure it meets the utmost standards of performance and reliability.”
The recent test follows an earlier successful trial in February and forms part of an ongoing series of evaluations aimed at validating the missile’s range, accuracy, and integration with existing U.S. Army platforms. PrSM is designed to be compatible with both the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), offering modularity and open-systems architecture for future upgrades.
The programme is part of the U.S. Army’s broader long-range precision fires modernisation effort, a top priority within its multi-domain operations strategy. Lockheed Martin has said the system is intended to provide rapid, deep-strike capability against high-value and time-sensitive targets.
That’ll be a nice addition to the M270 magazine.

Yep, I was surprised they were still testing it- I’d thought I’d read that the US Army were taking delivery of initial lots this year. Maybe I mis-read, or the programme got delayed.
I think we’re on the customer list, but not yet placed an order, if I understand correctly. Will be good to get them in inventory.
PrSM may be the most significant weapon anywhere in the world at the moment. It will revolutionise everything from SEAD to Anti ship capability for the USMC.
The first of 42 HIMARS for the ADF has arrived in Australia. They were on display at the recent Avalon air show alongside a mock up of a PrSM missile. Australia has contributed funding to the development and testing of the PrSM missile and will acquire them (most likely Increment 2 with an anti-shipping capability).
The first batch of the shorter range GLMRS missiles for the ADFs HIMARS launchers will be manufactured in Australia. It is likely that PrSM may either be manufactured and/or assembled in Australia.
They are part of a $4.1 billion investment in long range missile strike systems across all three services of the ADF.
Yes agree that PrSMs range and precision is a game changer. The land strike version poses a real threat to long range SAM systems like the S400.
For Australia the Increment 2 variant with maritime strike capability will be the more significant. For example, the 500 km range would have been able to hold at risk the recent (and future) PLAN ships from land for much of their circumnavigation of the Australian mainland without needing to resort to the RAAFs or RANS inventory of maritime strike (LRASM, JSM, NSM, Harpoon, Tomahawk etc.) options.
I can really see the attraction for Australia!
I would very much like to see PrSM forward deployed with British troops in Lithuania and elsewhere, to give those units long enough reach that they pose a threat in being, not just a trip wire.
While I don’t really see it to be hugely necessary, having some of the Increment 2 (I didn’t even know it existed, to be honest), would be useful- launchers on the UK mainland could effectively close the English Channel and most of the North Sea to unfriendly shipping- the Irish Sea also, in fact.
I bet there are those who might challenge the remit of the BA to attack targets over 400km away. Step forward, the RAF!
As long as they can guarantee to be able to deliver the same weight of fire, with the same response time, at the same locations regardless of GBAD and prevailing weather!
