The Royal Air Force (RAF) Global Enablement Medical Force has been awarded the 2023 Firmin Sword of Peace for its exceptional humanitarian contributions, according to a press release.

Presented at RAF Brize Norton by Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, the Chief of the Air Staff, the award recognises the unit’s efforts to foster goodwill and provide critical medical support in challenging circumstances around the world.

The Firmin Sword of Peace, established in 1966, is annually awarded to a Royal Navy, Army, RAF, or Joint Service unit that has made significant contributions to building positive relationships with communities both at home and overseas.

The RAF Medical Force was commended for its extraordinary deployments during 2023, including:

  • Operation Greenlighter – Supporting disaster relief after the devastating earthquake in Türkiye.
  • Operation Polarbear – Providing critical medical care during the crisis in Sudan.

In these missions, the Medical Force delivered life-saving care to thousands under extremely challenging conditions, embodying the spirit of humanitarian service.

“It’s an honour to present RAF Global Enablement’s Medical Force with the 2023 Firmin Sword of Peace for their dedication, resilience, and professionalism. The commitment shown by our Regular and Reservist personnel represents the very spirit of service and excellence that the RAF stands for,” said Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton.

Beyond its contributions to global operations, the Tactical Medical Wing of the Medical Force has also supported local communities through a co-responder program with the South-Central Ambulance Service. This initiative not only aids local emergency response efforts but also ensures personnel maintain their clinical skills.

Reflecting on the achievement, Group Captain Rowley, Commander of the Medical Force, said, “This award reflects the patient-centred dedication, professionalism, and compassion of every member of the Medical Force. This award truly belongs to the entire Medical Force, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved together.”
