Late at night, at the direction of their respective governments, the militaries of the United States and United Kingdom, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and New Zealand conducted an additional round of strikes against 36 Houthi targets across 13 locations in Yemen in response to the Houthis’ continued attacks against international and commercial shipping as well as naval vessels transiting the Red Sea.

The strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities that the Houthis use to threaten global trade, and the lives of innocent mariners, and are in response to a series of illegal, dangerous, and destabilising Houthi actions since previous coalition strikes on January 11 and 22, 2024, including the January 27 attack which struck and set ablaze the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker M/V Marlin Luanda.

Last night’s strike specifically targeted sites associated with the Houthis’ deeply buried weapons storage facilities, missile systems and launchers, air defence systems, and radars.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence:

“The Typhoons employed Paveway IV precision guided bombs against multiple military targets identified by careful intelligence analysis at three locations. At As Salif, due west of Sanaa on the Red Sea coast, our aircraft targeted a ground control station inside a defensive position. This station had been used to control Houthi drones, both attack and reconnaissance types, launched from further inland, operating over the sea against international shipping. 

A second drone ground control station was confirmed to be at Al Munirah, on the same stretch of coastline. As with As Salif, the station provided direct control of reconnaissance and attack drones targeting shipping in the Red Sea, its position on the coast allowing it to maintain the line of sight data links such weapons require to target ships with any accuracy. The Typhoons also attacked a significant number of targets at Bani. An initial group of facilities there were successfully struck by the RAF on the night of 11 January, and since then a further set of buildings at the site had been positively confirmed as involved in the Houthi drone and missile operations and were duly targeted on this occasion.

As is standard practice with such operations by the Royal Air Force, the strikes were very carefully planned to ensure minimal risk of civilian casualties, and by bombing at night, any such risks were further mitigated.”

The Houthis’ now more than 30 attacks on commercial vessels and naval vessels since mid-November constitute an international challenge. Recognizing the broad consensus of the international community, our coalition of likeminded countries committed to upholding the rules-based order has continued to grow. We remain committed to protecting freedom of navigation and international commerce and holding the Houthis accountable for their illegal and unjustifiable attacks on commercial shipping and naval vessels.

Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea but let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: we will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways in the face of continued threats.”

    Though it was known, for instance, that Paris negotiated a $5.5 billion deal for 42 new Rafale fighters.

    and just under $1 billion for high-sea patrol vehicles, the announcement Thursday also detailed a few procurements that flew under the radar, like additional armored vehicles, helicopters for special forces and frigate upgrades.

    As the French Institute of International Relations wrote last July, “The new French Military Program Law for 2024-2030 resolutely commits the French armed forces to the path of high intensity,” which it goes on to describe as “a type of engagement deploying a high level of kinetic energy within a limited space and duration.”

    For the army, the DGA procurement agency said it has signed a contract worth some €350 million ($378 million) with Nexter, a KNDS company, for 109 new generation Caesar (Mk II) truck-mounted guns with first deliveries scheduled for 2026. The company has been developing this version since December 2021.

But the French Gov won’t buy American and they have no industrial stake in the project. So they have a very long wait for 5th or 6th gen capability.             Lockheed held its fourth-quarter earnings call yesterday, with president and CEO Jim Taiclet blaming the delays on software associated with Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3), a key component of modernization efforts for the aircraft, which were first delivered to the US military in 2015.

            “While this system maturation process continues to advance, it is taking somewhat more time than we originally anticipated,” Taiclet said. Lockheed is still targeting the second quarter of 2024 for delivery of TR-3-equipped F-35s, but “we now believe that the third quarter may be more likely scenario for a TR-3 software acceptance,” the CEO added.

            WASHINGTON — The Pentagon expects to start issuing early next year the first in a series of sole-source contracts to Pratt & Whitney to upgrade the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter’s engines.

            In a notice posted online Monday, the government said the follow-on contract actions to RTX-owned Pratt & Whitney will begin in the second quarter of fiscal 2024, and continue through the end of December 2031.

            The estimated value of the contracts was not immediately available, but Jen Latka,, vice president for Pratt’s F135 program, told reporters in December 2022 the ECU’s development would likely cost about $2.4 billion.

            Pratt & Whitney, which makes the F135 engines that power all three version of the F-35, said in a separate statement Tuesday it expects to finish the preliminary design of its Engine Core Upgrade for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in December.

            The company added that it will be ready for the government’s official review of that design the following month.

            The Engine Core Upgrade is intended to provide more power and cooling capabilities to the F-35 without requiring its current F135 engines to be replaced with a new design.

            Defense officials say the power and cooling boost will be necessary as the F-35 continues to be upgraded, particularly with a slate of improvements known as the Block 4 modernization, which will include greater weapons capacity, new sensors, and improved electronic warfare and target recognition capabilities.

            “Pratt & Whitney has 600 employees fully dedicated to this effort, and we’re on track to deliver F-35 operators the power needed to enable Block 4 capabilities and beyond starting in 2029,” Jen Latka, vice president for Pratt’s F135 program, said in a statement.

          • Your missing the point, the block III aircraft we currently operate with AMRAAM and Paveway IV is already one of the most advanced capabilities in the world and more than adequate for any task. Block IV is now so advance it really should be described as the F35 DEF version. It comes with a new radar and enhanced engine. The Block IV weapons we integrate in Meteor and SPEAR are about keeping the F35 relevant for decades to come. All our aircraft will be upgraded to block IV because we purchased them later than the US. That’s very different to our typhoons where we had to purchase large numbers of tranche 1 that could not be upgraded.

            The F35 is going through a massive multi billion dollar upgrade and we are getting all of that for virtually nothing. Compare that to the cost and delayed nature of the Typhoon enhancements that are costing us billions.

            No matter what the French do to Rafale it’s still a 4th Gen aircraft that will struggle on a modern battlefield. The UK and US will also be operating large fleets of 4th Gen aircraft but they have the 5th Gen aircraft to conduct SEAD/DEAD operations at the start of a conflict that the French don’t have. No disrespect to the French or Rafale it’s a great aircraft but it’s the product of a country operating on a budget and it can’t be compared to F35.

            Almost every other major NATO Airforce will be operating F35 and this puts France at a massive disadvantage to even Belgium.

            “A senior U.S. Air Force officer has said that there is no value in including the service’s current fleet of F-35A Joint strike fighters in tabletop war games simulating future high-end conflicts, such as one covering an American military response to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

            That same individual also called into question how relevant any of the service’s existing examples of these fighter jets would be for conducting combat operations near or over the territory of a near-peer adversary, including China.

            Air Force Lieutenant General Clint Hinote, the service’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategy, Integration, and Requirements, made his remarks regarding the F-35A in an interview focusing on a wargame last year that simulated an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

            Defense News described the outcome of that wargame as a “pyrrhic” victory for the U.S. military and one that was only achieved by the employment of capabilities that are not yet actually in service.

            Those capabilities include F-35As equipped with the full suite of upgrades enabled by the still-in-development Block 4 software package. Block 4 F-35As are set to feature enhanced radar and electronic warfare capabilities as well as the ability to carry new weapons.

            “We tried to design ourselves where we would be a hard target. As an example, we never filled up any airfield more than 50 percent, so even if you lost that entire airfield, you wouldn’t lose your entire fleet,” Hinote said.

            Finally, instead of separate command organizations for the land, maritime and air domains, the Air Force created small command-and-control teams comprised of five to 30 individuals from all the services. The team members were able to oversee the battle space and direct forces using portable technology, such as hand-held tablets.

            “You would pass off the command of your forces, and in a way that meant that you were not ever knocked out of the fight,” Hinote said.

            “They could knock [Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii] out of the fight. In fact, they do almost every time we play this. But what they can’t do is they can’t knock out every command-and-control element that you have out there.”

            Now, what has emerged is a list of what the Air Force thinks it needs to win a war after 2030:

            Tactical aircraft

            The air power community has been divided in recent years over how to affordably replace the Air Force’s aging tactical aircraft fleet while ensuring there are enough advanced fighters to battle the likes of Russia or China.

            Should the service move forward with its plan to eventually replace the A-10, F-16 and some F-15C/D aircraft with stealthy fifth-generation F-35s? Or could a mix of F-35s and new fourth-generation jets like the F-15EX give the service more flexibility?

            This disagreement heightened in February, when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown floated the idea of designing a less expensive, non-stealthy follow-on fighter to replace the service’s older F-16s instead of replacing them with the F-35, as had been planned for decades.

            The service is currently evaluating its options through a tactical aircraft study to inform the fiscal 2023 budget, which could result in cuts to the Air Force’s program of record for 1,763 F-35As.

            “We don’t have to make that decision this year,” Hinote said. However, he added, the roles each aircraft played during the war game could influence the outcome of the study “to a great degree.”

            In the war game, four types of aircraft made up the Air Force’s future fighter inventory. Three of those are ongoing programs of record for the service:

            The highly advanced Next Generation Air Dominance Fighter or NGAD, and its associated systems, which were capable of penetrating highly contested airspace.

            The Lockheed Martin-made F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which operated as a “workhorse” aircraft attacking targets at short ranges.

            Boeing F-15EX aircraft, which mainly conducted defensive missions but were also loaded with long-range missiles and hypersonic weapons to strike targets farther downrange.

            Finally, the service operated a non-stealthy, light, tactical fighter for homeland and base defense, which could also be flown in support of counter-terrorism missions.

            That aircraft, which aligns with Brown’s idea for a “fourth-generation plus” replacement for the F-16, doesn’t currently exist in the service’s budget plans.

            For years, Air Force officials have portrayed the F-35 as the aircraft that it would use to infiltrate into enemy airspace to knock out surface-to-air missiles and other threats without being seen.

            However, in the war game, that role was played by the more survivable NGAD, in part due to the F-35′s inability to traverse the long ranges of the Pacific without a tanker nearby, Hinote said.

            Instead, the F-35 attacked Chinese surface ships and ground targets, protected American and Taiwanese assets from Chinese aircraft, and provided cruise missile defense during the exercise. But “it’s not the one that’s pushing all the way in [Chinese airspace], or even over China’s territory,” Hinote said.

            “We wouldn’t even play the current version of the F-35,” Hinote said. “It wouldn’t be worth it. … Every fighter that rolls off the line today is a fighter that we wouldn’t even bother putting into these scenarios.”

          • The MOD is on record stating all our F35 will be upgraded to block IV standard. Also these war games are based largely on future scenarios not today and this is why F35 is being upgraded so it can continue to cope with future threats.

          • Hi Nige, part of the engine upgrade is already being incorporated. This was due to the elevated temperatures that the turbine was running at. Which has significantly affected the F35B, running the F135-600 engine. This showed up as micro-fractures and the flaking off of protective coatings. Which was found during periodic maintenance.

            The fix is to introduce a new turbine section. Which was originally planned for inclusion in the scheduled engine upgrade. The new turbine should allow the engine to run longer at max temperatures.

    • The really important point is the French are changing there armed forces to focus on high intensity warfare..this is very interesting as since after WW2 the French military posture..especially their army has been that of a space between a low intensity force and a high intensity force…because of their perceived needs around colonial warfare in Africa..which required lighter air mobile forces…but also the ability to fight an army designed for high intensity warfare ( the USSR)…France picked a route in which it designed its army to fight colonial wars but to be just heavyweight enough so it could force another nation to fully deploy its army to threaten France…at which point France has aways made it clear it would use its strategic nuclear deterrent…its very interesting that France is moving away from this and potentially focusing on its armed focusing on fighting a high intensity war..it indicates a shift in strategic thinking in France.

          Earlier this month, on Oct. 1, a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down over Sanaa: footage filmed from several different locations (the UAV was over the capital in daylight conditions when it was destroyed) depicted the incident from start to finish.”

          I know one crashed into a mountain due to a technical malfunction.
