Drone shots taken in the early hours of the morning show the sheer scale of new frigate HMS Cardiff, a Type 26 Frigate being built in Glasgow.
The ship is undergoing structural work before being floated and transported to BAE Systems’ Scotstoun facility in 2024 for outfitting.
Below is a gallery of the images, just click to enlarge.
For the avoidance of doubt, the drone footage was obtained legally by a qualified person in adherence to UK drone legislation and guidance. In addition, the drone is insured, and a flight plan was submitted using drone safety software.
There’s a video too.
Here's some footage of HMS Cardiff. Footage of HMS Glasgow will follow soon. pic.twitter.com/kPR9SU16vJ

Simon Lister, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Naval Ships business, previously expressed pride and satisfaction in the progress. “The emergence of HMS Cardiff is a very proud moment for everyone involved in her construction. We have now completed all major units of the ship and in the coming weeks our skilled teams will consolidate the ship in preparation for next year’s float off,” Lister said.
The first Type 26 frigate, HMS Glasgow, is currently being outfitted at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun facility, we have some pretty exciting drone footage coming of that for the first time very soon.
Your pics got in the Papers, good job UKDJ!
Which paper? Cheers for letting us know.
There was a very similar photo of Cardiff in yesterday’s Times, about page 4. Not sure when yours were taken but had the same lighting, it was the “top of bow” view I think
George can I pinch the 1st Image as a screen saver please ?
Engineering as a work of art and I think the Clyde really helped you 🙂
Those pics of F35 under the northern lights are already my home screen on every device I own, I’ll have to work out which ones to replace 😊
Those are such great pictures. I saved them too
George, do you know the definite, or at least projected, date for the float out of Cardiff? And also the date of Venturer’s roll out at Rosyth. You are much closer to the action in the shipbuilding world than most of us. And some more up to date photos of Venturer would be good if you can get them, the last ones I have seen were several months old and I suspect she has progressed a lot recently, not least in the application of a coat or two of pussers grey.
Thanks. Nick
You’re much more polite than the other Nick C we see around here.
Nice to have a change 🙂
And I thought I was the only one, are there others? I smell a conspiracy theory, or are you just never alone with schizophrenia!!!
Just read back some of the old Scotland articles…
“next year’s float off”
This year surely
The quote mightve been from last year.
This site does love a nice drone pic of Frigates under construction!!
👌
Thanks George for these welcome regular progress reports.
Very encouraging. Thanks George.
..and thanks from Durban George 😄
