According to a recent press release from NATO, the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) has officially begun to take over key responsibilities from U.S. and international organisations that have been supporting Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The release quotes U.S. Army General Christopher G. Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, as saying, “The work of NSATU – to coalesce Allied and partner support – is designed to place Ukraine in a position of strength, which puts NATO in a position of strength to keep safe and prosperous its one billion people in both Europe and North America. This is a good day for Ukraine and a good day for NATO.”
According to the press release, NSATU has now reached a stage where it is assuming responsibilities from both the International Donor Coordination Centre (IDCC) and the U.S.-led Security Assistance Group – Ukraine (SAG-U). German Army Major General Hartmut Renk, the deputy commander of NSATU, is quoted in the release stating, “NSATU is now at a point in its development where it is taking on responsibilities from the International Donor Coordination Centre (IDCC) and the U.S.-led Security Assistance Group – Ukraine (SAG-U).”
NSATU, which was agreed upon at the NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., earlier this year, will focus on coordinating the provision, transfer, and repair of military equipment critical to Ukraine’s defence.
Additionally, it will facilitate training in Allied countries to enhance Ukraine’s military effectiveness. This will help Ukraine meet NATO standards and achieve full interoperability with NATO forces, further bolstering its defence capabilities.
