King Charles has formally invited U.S. President Donald Trump to the United Kingdom for a second state visit, an unprecedented move for a sitting American president.

The letter, released this evening, underscores the strength of the UK-US special relationship as Prime Minister Keir Starmer visits Washington to meet with Trump.

The letter, signed “Yours Most Sincerely, Charles,” expresses the King’s desire to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest while planning the historic visit.

“Quite apart from this presenting an opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, it would also offer a valuable chance to plan a historic second state visit to the United Kingdom,” the letter reads.

King Charles acknowledges the unprecedented nature of such an invitation:

“As you will know, this is unprecedented by a US President.”

He further suggests a collaborative approach to planning the visit:

“That is why I would find it helpful for us to be able to discuss, together, a range of options for location and programme content. In so doing, working together, I know we will further enhance the special relationship between our two countries of which we are both so proud.”

The letter’s release coincides with Keir Starmer’s first visit to Washington as Prime Minister, where he is expected to discuss security, trade, and transatlantic cooperation with Trump.

The state visit invitation signals the UK’s commitment to deepening ties with the U.S. under the current administration, despite diplomatic tensions. If accepted, Trump’s second state visit would make history, reinforcing the symbolic and strategic importance of UK-US relations under both governments.

No, they’ll just see it for what it is. Diplomacy, carried out by an adult who’s playing one of the few decent cards available to him, for the good of our country.

This is the 3rd time I have read the phrase ‘orange ahit gibbon’ this week, and I like it.

I will now adopt this in all official correspondence that relate to the gentleman in question, which basically consists of me posting on the internet.

It’s for this reason we have a Royal Family. Great for controlling dictators and US presidents.

In this case he has a point. Delivery of this invite has helped Stramer massage trumps ego, without actually giving him anything of substance, and made Trump more receptive.

I’m practically a republican, I generally think the Royal Family is an arcane and silly institution and most of its members are monstrous. But I absolutely agree with that comment, this is exactly what the Royals are for, they are a useful diplomatic tool and they totally pander to the wants and pathetic neediness of your average dictator and gauche presidents who think gold taps are classy.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
Considering what some are saying here these last few weeks, that saying is rather apt?
Glad he’s been invited, we need to try to keep him onside.

Agree, we should throw what ever trinkets we can at the man, the Americans made a terrible mistake and it’s our job to help them (even from themselves) We need to do what ever we can to keep him distracted and keep the wheels on. He is going to loose the mid terms in 2 years and will be a complete lame duck we need to last that long. Knight hoods, lord ships and buying his golf courses off him at above market rates should all be on the table. Kier can tell him if he wants a knighthood like… Read more »

You see to spend a lot of time bluntly telling people what to do and lowering the tone of the comment section in the process.
Perhaps in this particular case you might consider taking your own advice? Just a thought.

This is King Charles’ day job – representing UK PLC.

In this case getting the UK out of a tariff war which would pay for a head of state for centuries has to be a big plus for the population and gets a left wing government off the hook.

This positive mood music will play well with the markets if UK PLC;

swerves tariffs; and
Get a trade deal; and
US back UK militarily.

This could get Reeves off the hook.

Yep, we have some dependencies on the US and we can’t afford to fall out with them, as much as I’d love to tell trump where to go. If the noises coming from Trump right now have any substance it could be argued Stramer has played a blinder!

Listening to that press conference earlier I honestly thought he was going to start kissing Keir, it was that weird. Starmer the Trump Charmer! Perhaps the boring sod has found his true calling at last. There could be worse talents for a British Prime Minister to have at the moment, that’s for sure.

Boring is good. I don’t want to hear about the PM in the news everyday. Quiet, efficient competence is exactly what we need and in terms of dealing with Trump, spot on. Trump needs to feel he is the biggest gorilla in the room, let him think that, Starmer doesn’t need to grandstand or massage his own ego.

I think our new policy with the US should be friends with a but, in that I mean I don’t agree with the German stance. But I also now think we need to be pretty clear we are focused on the Euro Atlantic, south Atlantic, artic and Indian Ocean regions and our interests in the pacific should be neutral and Trade only with everyone.

Agree. As I have mentioned countless times though, the military side of the “Pacific tilt” was always miniscule. It was always about trade, from CCTP to GCAP to AUKUS. Our forces out there are mostly of long standing, and tiny.
Our QEC deploying to the Indian Ocean can be as meaningful as further east.
If the US is stepping back to some degree from ENATO, then it must be made clear to them they’re on their own if China kicks off beyond a supporting role.

US officials told their British counterparts: If you are “deemed not to be doing what you are told you will suddenly find out missiles won’t fire and planes won’t fly. You have got to be careful.”

Starmer did well in press conference and Trump managed to keep it together.

Hopefully it goes well with Zelenskyy tomorrow. I’m sure the UK briefed Ukraine to keep it together and sign any bit of paper the Donald thinks gets him some minerals from an active war zone.

Honestly, I don’t like it, but Her late Majesty met with all sorts of unpleasant characters over her very long reign, so I don’t think it’s the end of the world if His Majesty has a state visit with America’s Fuehrer.
