An Australian frigate has conducted what Canberra described as a routine transit through the South China Sea, with Chinese state media claiming the vessel was tracked and monitored throughout its passage.
The Royal Australian Navy’s Anzac-class frigate HMAS Toowoomba sailed through the contested waterway on 12 February as part of a Regional Presence Deployment in the Indo-Pacific. According to Australia’s Department of Defence, the transit was carried out in accordance with international law.
China’s state-backed Global Times, citing an unnamed military source, reported that the People’s Liberation Army conducted “full-process tracking, monitoring, and alert operations throughout the transit”, language typically used by Beijing when responding to foreign naval movements it considers sensitive.
Australia reiterated that its vessels operate lawfully under international norms, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones said the Australian Defence Force has a long history of operating in the region, describing the South China Sea as a “vital waterway for the entire international community.” He added that the deployment demonstrates Australia’s commitment to “a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo Pacific.”
HMAS Toowoomba is currently deployed across the Indo-Pacific, conducting engagements and exercises with regional partners. The Department of Defence said such deployments are intended to protect Australia’s interests, preserve what it describes as the rules-based order, and enhance interoperability with allies.
Commanding Officer HMAS Toowoomba, Commander Alicia Harrison, said the ship’s role in the deployment underscores Australia’s “steadfast commitment to a secure, stable, and prosperous region.” She added: “Our mission is built on partnership working side by side with regional allies and partners to strengthen collective security and uphold international law.” She also noted that “Regional Presence Deployments also provide vital experience for our people, ensuring we can respond to maritime challenges.”

Nice seeing the 2×4 NSM on these Anzacs. Something the RNZN could also do on their two frigates. Missiles and launchers both made locally in Newcastle, NSW, just across the ditch from NZ.
I can’t wait to see Chinese vessels doing the same in Diego Garcia. I would live to know Nigel Farages plan to stop them.
What’s yours ? 😁
Mine’s a pint of bitter; thanks for asking.
