The Royal Canadian Navy has transferred command of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) to Türkiye, marking the end of a five-month deployment during a challenging period for global security.
Commodore Matthew Coates of Canada handed over leadership to Rear Admiral (LH) H. İlker Avcı of the Turkish Navy during a ceremony at Aksaz Naval Base, Türkiye, on 3 December.
Reflecting on his time as commander, Commodore Coates praised the professionalism of the task group and its contribution to NATO’s maritime presence:
“Together, we have strengthened NATO’s maritime presence and upheld the security of the Alliance’s waters with professionalism and commitment. It has been an honour to lead this distinguished group, and I am confident the mission will continue to thrive under the leadership of our Turkish Allies,” he said.
During the Canadian-led deployment, SNMG2 operated in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean from 1 July to 3 December, focusing on deterrence, cohesion, and collective defence amid ongoing security challenges, including the war in Ukraine and increased tensions in the Middle East.
The task group conducted surveillance of Russian naval activities, enhanced maritime situational awareness, and supported NATO’s southeastern flank.
The group participated in key NATO exercises such as Neptune Strike 24-2, a multi-domain vigilance activity, and Dynamic Guard, which focused on electronic warfare and anti-ship missile defence. Ships under Commodore Coates’ command also collaborated with naval units from a diverse range of nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Türkiye.
Scheduled port visits to Greece, Italy, and Türkiye strengthened diplomatic ties and showcased NATO’s unity, with Commodore Coates meeting key military leaders and representatives.
SNMG2 will continue its mission under Turkish leadership, maintaining a visible NATO presence in the Mediterranean to ensure the defence and stability of the Euro-Atlantic area.
SNMG2 is one of NATO’s four Standing Naval Forces, operating under Allied Maritime Command in Northwood, UK. It serves as a multinational task group that underscores NATO’s solidarity, conducting exercises and real-world operations in times of crisis and conflict.
This marks the second time Canada has commanded SNMG2.
