Elbit Systems Deutschland has secured a significant order from Lufthansa Technik to equip Germany’s official Airbus A350 aircraft with its advanced J-MUSIC Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system.

This contract follows a decision by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Operations of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) and is set to span five years.

The installation marks the first use of Elbit’s DIRCM system on the A350 model and adds to the company’s growing portfolio of DIRCM technology installations across a variety of aircraft.

Wolfgang Bauer, CEO of Elbit Systems Deutschland, expressed pride in collaborating with Lufthansa Technik, stating, “We are proud to be working with Lufthansa Technik on this important project and look forward to further strengthening the impact and trust in our solutions.”

The J-MUSIC DIRCM system is designed to provide vital protection for aircraft from advanced surface-to-air missiles. It integrates advanced laser and imaging technology, offering a proven solution for both military and commercial platforms worldwide. Elbit say that the system’s effectiveness in protecting high-profile assets has established it as a market leader in self-protection technologies.

Oren Sabag, General Manager of Elbit Systems ISTAR & EW, highlighted the growing global demand for such systems, noting, “As threats continue to increase, more and more nations are turning to Elbit Systems’ self-protection solutions to protect their fleets.” He emphasised the DIRCM system’s ability to counter evolving threats, ensuring reliable performance and seamless integration across various aircraft types.

Michael von Puttkamer, Vice President of Special Aircraft Services at Lufthansa Technik, explained the necessity of enhanced protection for Germany’s political and parliamentary aircraft, citing the rising global instability and the increased risk posed by surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS). He added, “The security situation demands that Germany ensures the protection of its own leadership. We are therefore proud of this lighthouse project with Elbit Systems and Airbus and look forward to contributing our expertise.”
