Peers in the House of Lords used a debate on the UKâs new defence deal with Norway to accuse the SNP Government of neglecting shipbuilding and apprenticeships, arguing that the £10 billion Type 26 contract proves Scotlandâs future lies within the United Kingdomâs defence framework.
Baroness Curran opened the exchange by describing the agreement as âa vote of confidence in the UK Labour governmentâ and âthe future of shipbuilding on the Clyde for years to come.â She contrasted the deal with what she called âthe SNP governmentâs failure to invest in skills,â pointing out that apprenticeship funding in Scotland had âfallen by more than 30 percent in real terms.â She urged ministers in Edinburgh to âfollow the lead of the UK Government and prioritise the delivery of investment, jobs and skills.â
Responding, Defence Minister Lord Lemos said the contract âprovides long-term security for shipbuilding in Scotlandâ and praised the role of BAE Systems and Ferguson Shipyard. He agreed that âinvestment in apprenticeships and skills development is crucial,â adding that the SNP âdonât know what theyâre missing by not being in your Lordshipsâ House.â
Liberal Democrat peer Lord Bruce of Bennachie joined the criticism, saying the Norwegian order âshows that they value Scotlandâs defence skills rather more than the Scottish Government does.â He said the deal underlined that âScotlandâs interests lie best with being part of the United Kingdomâs defence and security pact.â
Baroness Adams of Craigielea described the contract as âemblematic of the tremendous strength of Britain in defence technology and the skill of the Clyde workforce,â noting that it was won âin the face of very stiff international competition, including France, Germany and the United States.â
Lord Lemos said the deal represented âa vote of confidence in the British defence sector and our world-leading anti-submarine capabilities.â He also spoke on the strategic partnership with Norway, calling it âone of our strongest allies since the Second World War.â
Conservative peer Baroness Goldie argued that Scotlandâs defence success had come âin spite of the Scottish Government, not because of it.â She proposed creating a new Defence Industry Forum in Scotland to âshowcase the excellence of what Scotland is producing for our defence capabilityâ and to ârequire the Scottish Government to explain more clearly what it thinks its role is.â
Lord Lemos welcomed the idea, confirming that he would pass it to the Secretary of State and attend such a forum himself. He also pointed out that âdefence directly employs 10,000 serving personnel and 4,000 civil servants in Scotland,â with â£2.1 billion in MOD spending last year, including £1.3 billion on shipbuilding and repair.â
He said £23 million of that total had gone directly to small and medium-sized enterprises, showing âour clear commitment to Scotlandâs role in national defence.â

Maybe someone should point out to Barroness Curran that if the Labour Government she served in hadnât cancelled half of the T45 Destroyer numbers we wouldnât be in this mess in the 1st place.
It was supposed to be 12, then 10, then âupto 8â then just 6 ! Result other than 5 River OPVâs BAe has no work for their skilled workers, no need for apprentices and the CFEâs turned the tap off.
But yes the SNP have zero interest in developing or supporting Defence work in Scotland, it doesnât fit their âVictimâ mentality.
Funny how a large section of the workforce in defence industries consistently vote and support the SNP. Many are SNP members! Unless your contributors are suggesting they are thick, which would be a concern in such specialist jobs, I donât think derogatory comments on the SG hit the mark
SNP ?
Never heard of them.

” a vote of confidence in the government” For doing what?
These unelected politically appointed layabouts should not be commenting on things. A Tory peer (look up where the term Tory came from), representing a party that has overseen the hollowing out of our defence, using the so-called peace dividend to facilitate tax cuts for wealthy donors and financial manipulators, has no credibility in commenting on almost anything. Defence is a reserved matter and defence while valuable is actually only a small part of the Scottish Economy.
