NATO’s Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoană, expressed the organisation’s steadfast support for Ukraine during the Third Summit of the International Crimea Platform held on 23 August 2023.

Mr. Geoană highlighted the outcomes of the recent Vilnius Summit held in July, mentioning, “NATO’s support to Ukraine remains unwavering.

He shed light on the creation of the new NATO-Ukraine Council, which convened for the inaugural time. This council establishes a platform where “Ukraine and NATO Allies” can engage “as equals to hold crisis consultations, and jointly take decisions.

Further echoing NATO’s commitment, the Vilnius Summit also marked the consensus on a new multi-year aid package aiming to ensure that the Ukrainian military is fully aligned with NATO standards. Notably, the necessity for a Membership Action Plan has been rescinded.

Highlighting the Alliance’s ongoing efforts, the Deputy Secretary General emphasised the importance of continued military backing for Ukraine. He pointed out the recent decisions by member nations, like the Netherlands and Denmark, to supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets.

Geoană affirmed, “It is for Ukraine to decide the terms of peace. NATO’s task, and the task of all the friends of Ukraine, is to support you. And you can count on our continued support for as long as it takes.
