The United States has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Qatar valued at approximately $1.96 billion, including eight MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and a wide array of advanced munitions and support systems.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the deal on 26 March 2025.
The proposed package includes not only the MQ-9B drones—one of the most capable unmanned systems currently available—but also extensive associated equipment. These include 110 AGM-114R2 Hellfire II missiles, Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, precision-guided bombs, advanced targeting radars, electronic warfare suites, secure communications systems, and spare parts.
The drones are expected to significantly enhance Qatar’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, as well as its precision strike potential.
The U.S. government described the sale as a move to bolster a “friendly country that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.” It also stated that the system would primarily support Qatar’s homeland defence needs and provide a deterrent to regional threats.
“This capability is a deterrent to regional threats and will primarily be used to strengthen its homeland defense,” the DSCA said in a statement, adding that “Qatar will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.”
Key U.S. defence contractors involved in the potential deal include General Atomics (maker of the MQ-9), Lockheed Martin, RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies), Boeing, L3Harris, and Leonardo SpA of Italy.
Despite the scale of the sale, the U.S. government confirmed that the transfer will not require additional personnel deployments to Qatar and will not affect American defence readiness.
