Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is conducting search and rescue efforts in an effort to find a possible sailor overboard off the coast of Southern California.
In a statement, the U.S Navy say:
“The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) is conducting search and rescue efforts in support of a possible Sailor overboard off the coast of Southern California, Dec. 10.
The ship initiated search and rescue procedures after a lookout spotted what appeared to be a person in the water. Three search and rescue helicopters and a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat were launched in response, and one Sailor was unaccounted for during a commandwide muster.”
It is understood that the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy aircraft, USS Bunker Hill, USS Russell, and USS Howard and the USS Charleston are participating in the search and rescue efforts.
More on this as it develops.
Hope he is still out holding onto hope.
It must be really hard to work out if anyone is missing on a ship of this scale, muster roll call etc. Perhaps watch or phone app, carried by all, could do this digitally in seconds?
Oops there goes my business plan. Seriously though, I hope the sailor is picked up.
Only problem I could see with that would be possible hacking. I don’t really know what an enemy could gain from knowing how many people are on board a ship, especially if they don’t actually show location and just transmit if the person is on board the ship or not, but I imagine it could be a sticking point.
Is that Grange or Rosalie in the background?
Grange and Rosalie are the same ship. But yes, I’m pretty sure it is.
Hi Ryan
Ooops. Yes, Grange / Austin became Rosalie/ Austin. Because of George….!
Any update to this story? Fingers crossed the person if it was indeed a person has been found.
Sounds like this is quite a common occurrence on Yank carriers, 2 overboards in 4 months https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics/us-navy-ends-search-missing-sailor-believed-overboard/story%3fid=72882042?espv=1
Just very bad luck, or mental health issues and personal problems not dealt with sufficiently or taken seriously by those in command?
Looks like they, sadly, failed to find him. See:

I wonder what their standard protocols are for MOB? Should be a minimum of tracker device plus push button inflatable flotation device. Otherwise almost mission impossible
Evening geoff.
Are there any nets around vessels like CVN to prevent accidents?
Or are these suicidal cases where they’d be determined to jump regardless do you think?
