Reservists from 4 Battalion The Mercian Regiment have been on Exercise Saxon Shield in Northumberland, say the British Army.
The ten-day exercise at the Otterburn training area in Northumberland, is designed to make sure the reservists maintain a high standard of skill and readiness to deploy with regular units.
“It saw the soldiers complete their Military Annual Training Tests. The troops took part in their Annual Combat Marksmanship Test, various scenarios to test their skills on the range, and completed their navigation tests during the day and night.”
The British Army say that last year approximately 300 reservists from 4 Mercian were deployed to support the COVID-19 test sites in the North West of England, meaning some of their training was delayed.
The troops became one of the first reservist units to be called to support Operation Rescript.

A report criticising the lack of upgrades for the Chally 2s, leaving our tanks outmatched to the Russians.
From the perspective of English history these items of news are related. Mercia is heart of England. It was Mercian forces lead by Aethelfled, Lady of Mercia who did most of the heavy lifting to defeat the Danes. She raised the orphan boy Aethelstan who finished the job by defeating the combined Danish and Scots forces at Brunanburgh and was acknowledged as the first king of all England.
In a very real sense the heart and soul of the army has always been ‘the reserves’, men drawn from the community to defend the community. This was the system set up by Alfred of Wessex which formed a nation. The responsibility of government is to give them the time and the tools to do the job
Interesting read, thanks Paul.
You are welcome. Sometimes its good to go back to basics. Well I find it so anyway. The Royal Navy is often thought to date from Henry VIII. In fact Alfred the Great created a navy so that we could intercept the Viking longboats before they landed. Quick Reaction Alert. 🙂
“The Army is likely to find itself “outgunned” in any conflict with Russian forces, MPs have warned.
In a damning report, the Commons Defence Committee described efforts to modernise the Army’s fleet of Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV) as “woeful”.
