The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has issued a contract tender notice seeking a contractor for the construction of a temporary hangar at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton.
The project, valued at £666,000, aims to house aircraft displaced by ongoing upgrades at the base, home to Wildcat HMA Mk2, AH Mk1, and Merlin Mk4 aircraft.
The hangar is expected to be operational between 21 October 2024 and 31 March 2025.
The MOD specifies the need for a “clear span structure” measuring approximately 55m by 25m, with a minimum leg height of 7m, allowing space for “5 x Wildcat a/c (spread)” or a fully spread Merlin aircraft.
The structure’s doors must be “sufficiently large enough to facilitate the movement” of these aircraft, with a minimum door width of 20m and a height of 7m.
The contractor will be responsible for securing the hangar to a concrete base and ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards. The MOD emphasises that the structure must have a “minimum design life [of] 5 years” and that the installation and commissioning must be completed within a strict timeline.
Additionally, the contractor is required to provide essential documentation, including “fire safety certification” and engineering schematics.
Optional features for the hangar include insulation, lighting, a mechanical ventilation system, and a central crane gantry. The tender submission deadline is set for 4 October 2024. This project is part of the MOD’s efforts to maintain operational readiness at RNAS Yeovilton while critical upgrades to existing hangars are carried out.
More aircraft based here than at any other base in HM forces.
62 Wildcat ( 34 AH1 / 28 HMA2 )
24 Merlin HC4
Some Grobs too.
No wonder they need greater hangerage.
Couldnt the royal engineers do this kind of work on a military base?
Temporary structures are a regular thing all over the World with larger structures and longer lives than noted here (Temp Warehousing all over the place). The base is large and has handled large numbers of aircraft all its life. SHAR Fleet based there, CHF x 4 Squadrons, Fleet requirements unit with a large fleet of Hunters and Canberra’s so the place can handle it. Not really a worthy news item. Less A/C there today than in the past but the older Hangers will be filled up with other things these days.
