NATO has completed another focused patrol under Operation Sea Guardian (OSG), strengthening maritime situational awareness and counter-terrorism coordination across the Mediterranean.

During the latest deployment, allied ships and aircraft conducted coordinated patrols to monitor commercial shipping activity and deter illicit maritime behaviour. The operation supported the exchange of information and the development of a shared maritime picture between Allies and partners.

Operating in the Eastern Mediterranean, Hellenic Special Operations Forces and a Georgian boarding team embarked on the frigate HS Elli (F450) conducted joint training in CPR and Tactical Combat Casualty Care. Personnel from both teams exchanged knowledge on first aid delivery, equipment handling, and small-unit coordination, contributing to greater readiness and interoperability for future missions.

Captain Vasilios Stathoulias of the Hellenic Navy, who commanded the OSG task group, described the deployment as a collective effort. “Assuming the command of a NATO Task Group was a great honour,” he said. “During these past three weeks, we operated together with all Allied forces and partners as a team. Through our commitment and professionalism, we enhanced maritime situational awareness and promoted maritime security across the Eastern Mediterranean while acting as a deterrent against terrorism.”

Focused Patrols 25-4, led by HS Elli, centred on three core missions: gathering and sharing real-time data to improve maritime situational awareness, conducting patrols and hailing operations to prevent the misuse of the sea for terrorist purposes, and engaging with regional navies and coastguards to strengthen operational readiness and cooperation.

Operation Sea Guardian remains NATO’s primary non-Article 5 maritime security effort, complementing the Alliance’s broader deterrence posture. The latest iteration illustrates NATO’s continuing role in safeguarding Mediterranean sea lanes and supporting allied and partner maritime forces.
