A U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress was ‘intercepted’ by fighter jets from three NATO and partner nations during a high-intensity training exercise in the Arctic.

As part of Bomber Task Force 25-2, the U.S. aircraft took part in TOWER CITADEL, a simulated interception and air defence exercise involving Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35 Lightning IIs, Royal Danish Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons, and Swedish JAS 39 Gripens on 17 March.

According to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA), the mission allowed participating nations to test their quick reaction alert (QRA) response and power projection capabilities against simulated airborne threats.

“Training alongside Allies and partners enhances interoperability and ensures seamless coordination and communication ahead of potential real-world scenarios,” said Lt. Col. Kendall Smith, Bomber Task Force chief for USAFE-AFAFRICA.

“These missions directly strengthen lethality, readiness, and warfighting capabilities.”

The B-52H Stratofortress, a long-range strategic bomber capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, frequently conducts Bomber Task Force (BTF) deployments to reinforce deterrence and allied cooperation across Europe.

TOWER CITADEL, say the U.S. Air Force, represents the thirteenth operation completed during this deployment, underscoring the growing focus on Arctic security as tensions remain high in the region.

    NATO was a Cold War alliance that somehow held on for thirty years after the end of that war. Now it seems to finally be in its death throes.

          • Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014..because it wanted to control the government and did not like the fact the majority of Ukrainians removed a Russian puppet.

            Russia then spent 8 years fighting a proxy war with Ukraine using Russian speaking insurgents, when that did not work it Simple’s invaded Ukraine in 2022 and tried for a decapitation move..when that failed it settled for a catastrophic war of attrition.

            Russia wants a buffer state it controls as well as access to all that mineral wealth and what had been a big industrial capacity…nothing more or less.

B52s wouldn’t be caught within range of enemy fighters or at least without escorts that would intercept before they were within eyesight of the B52S. Probably an exercise NATO handicapped the US since they think that’s realistic.
