Armed Forces at Work in Scotland

Armed Forces at Work in Scotland is a UK Defence Journal reporting series examining how Scottish public sector organisations support employees with links to the Armed Forces.

Across Scotland, many public servants are reservists, veterans, service leavers, cadet force adult volunteers or members of Armed Forces families. While national commitments exist through the Armed Forces Covenant, the way those commitments operate in practice is shaped largely at organisational level. This series looks at how support functions day to day. Drawing on Freedom of Information disclosures, published policy and organisational comment, it explores how different bodies identify Armed Forces Community staff, what information is held centrally, and how support is delivered across large and varied workforces.

The aim is to improve understanding rather than to judge performance. Public organisations differ significantly in size, structure and operational demands, which affects what can be measured, how support is accessed and how visible Armed Forces issues are internally. By examining multiple organisations side by side, the series seeks to clarify how national commitments translate into working reality across Scotland’s public sector.
