BAE Systems has been awarded a $145 million contract by the U.S. Navy to perform maintenance and modernisation work on the USS Nitze, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.

Work is expected to begin in July.

Their Norfolk, U.S. shipyard will perform a depot maintenance period, including dry-docking the ship, performing underwater hull preservation work, upgrading the ship’s Aegis combat system and command and control equipment, and refurbishing living spaces for the crew.

BAE Systems HAS three full-service shipyards in California, Florida, and Virginia. The company’s Norfolk shipyard, which will perform the work on the USS Nitze, employs approximately 950 people and works with the Navy and subcontractor companies to accomplish its ship sustainment work.

“The depot maintenance periods are necessarily complex and critical to maintain the combat effectiveness of DDGs,” said David M. Thomas Jr., vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair.

“BAE Systems Norfolk looks forward to conducting the assigned DMP work that will enable the USS Nitze to move into its next phase of fleet readiness.”

    • BAE have yards in Florida, Virginia and California. Whilst they seem to get all the Mayport work for AB, at Jacksonville Florida, there are other yards undertaking AB work in Virginia and California. It just seems UKJ only ever mentions contracts awarded to BAE. Gonzalez, Mahan and Bainbridge are Norfolk based ABs at other companies yards.

      • Maybe BAE send George/Tom the press releases and as it is a UK company and this is UKDJ then that might be the reason why he puts them out?

        • I really don’t understand the UKDJ fetish with posting stuff about BAE. It’s just your standard post about American workers in American shipyards doing their thing. Not sure if somehow that someone somewhere feel better but… It just seems really odd.

  1. Not sure what the fetish is with UKDJ. It’s your standard American workers in American shipyards doing the maintenance but as long as there’s a British company somehow involved evidently that’s news.. it just seems weird.

      • And still completely irrelevant but good for you do you feel better now? Is it making you any money or what’s your program. Just not sure what the goofy deal is if someone says British in anything. It’s a multinational company they don’t give a rat’s ass about Britain or whatever program you’re on. But if it makes you feel good good for you.
