According to a release from BMT, the company has further strengthened its position in the maritime engineering and design sector in the Asia-Pacific region through the strategic acquisition of Australian Maritime Technologies (AMT).
This acquisition, announced on 27 November 2024, bolsters BMT’s expertise in naval architecture and marine engineering, enhancing its ability to pursue new opportunities in the APAC region.
BMT, a global leader in maritime design and technical consultancy, has acquired AMT, an Australian-owned naval design and marine engineering consultancy based in Melbourne. AMT has a long-standing reputation for high-quality service delivery, particularly in defence and commercial maritime sectors.
The acquisition is expected to leverage BMT’s global reach while tapping into AMT’s deep expertise in Australian maritime engineering, particularly for defence clients such as the Royal Australian Navy and major defence primes like Luerssen and BAE Systems.
As quoted in the release, Graeme Nayler, Regional Business Director for APAC at BMT, stated:
“We are thrilled to welcome AMT into the BMT family. Their extensive expertise in multidisciplinary naval ship design, mechanical systems, and combat systems integration aligns seamlessly with BMT’s vision to deliver innovative, comprehensive solutions to clients worldwide.”
AMT has played a key role in high-profile defence programmes, such as its collaboration with Luerssen Australia in the Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessel programme. This partnership supported the development of sovereign design expertise in Australia, particularly through the transfer of Design Authority for the OPV programme. BMT sees this acquisition as an opportunity to combine their international resources with AMT’s local expertise to enhance its capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region.
As Sarah Kenny OBE, Chief Executive of BMT, explained: “This acquisition is a key step in our strategy to enhance our capabilities and expand our presence in the defence and maritime sectors across the Asia-Pacific.”
The newly strengthened BMT-AMT partnership not only supports the Royal Australian Navy but also opens new avenues for growth and innovation within the regional market. Both companies remain committed to employee ownership, with AMT maintaining its staff-owned model while benefiting from BMT’s global resources.
This will ensure AMT’s independence and core values are preserved, the firm say, fostering a collaborative environment to drive further success in maritime engineering.
