On August 30, 2024, a formal ceremony took place at Allied Maritime Command Headquarters in Northwood, United Kingdom, marking the transfer of command of Commander, Submarines NATO (COMSUBNATO) from Rear Admiral Thomas Wall to Rear Admiral Bret Grabbe, both of the U.S. Navy.

COMSUBNATO is responsible for the operational command of Allied submarines assigned to NATO.

This role includes not only daily operational commitments but also the planning and execution of submarine-focused exercises such as Dynamic Mongoose, Dynamic Manta, and Dynamic Monarch.

These exercises aim to enhance interoperability among Allied forces and bolster deterrence in support of the NATO Alliance.

During the ceremony, Rear Admiral Wall, who has served in the role since May 2023, reflected on his tenure and the importance of collaborative efforts among submarine nations. “It’s been a privilege to serve with this team during an impactful time for the Alliance,” he stated.

He highlighted the need for “significant teamwork, creativity, and innovation” to achieve submarine interoperability across NATO’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).

Under Admiral Wall’s leadership, exercises such as Dynamic Mongoose and Dynamic Manta expanded significantly in scope and effectiveness.

Rear Admiral Bret Grabbe, the incoming commander, previously served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander for the U.S. Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Upon assuming command, he expressed pride in taking on the role and readiness to tackle the challenges ahead. “It’s an honour to assume command as COMSUBNATO and lead this talented team of professionals from across the Alliance,” he remarked, looking forward to building on Admiral Wall’s successes.
