Our intention with these changes is to fully seperate news and opinion.

We’ve always kept our news seperate from opinion but sometimes it has been difficult for our readers to tell as the articles often didn’t feature a noticable disclaimer explaining what the article is. So, we are making things clearer.

Analysis

Our analysis section contains opinion on topical defence issues and reviews of media such as books, games and films, please note that these are not news articles and are purely the opinion of the author and not necessarily that of the UK Defence Journal.

Our opinion articles feature a banner in red, just like this, explaining what they are and who the author is.

Fact Checks

Our fact checks aim to examine popular myths and misinformation with an eye to explaining the origin of the claim and in what way the claim is wrong.
These articles are not news and they are not opinion.

Our fact check articles feature a banner in green, just like this.

  1. Nice reorganisation George,

I haven’t said this before, but thanks for all your hard work much appreciated.

    Cheers CR

  2. Yes and thanks from me for my essential daily read and the insight if your knowledgeable commentators. Ps. Not forgetting the fun trolls.

  3. Excellent George. Can we have the same functionality for the comments section also? Lol
Joke aside great job and an extended thanks from this end also.

  4. Thanks for this. Looking forward to it.
Just a suggestion, it would be great to have a list view of all articles in chronological order. If I miss a few days worth of content, I generally then have to check each section individually to catch up on everything. Would be nice to see everything and know that I’m caught up in 1 simple view.
Thanks for all the hard work to your team and guest contributors.
    M@

  5. I completely agree with the changes my only suggestion is perhaps considering different colours as quite a lot of colour blind cannot distinguish well between red and green

  6. Thank you George! There’s a good balance of authoritative articles and mild leg-pulling. A great group of people who normally read articles first before they ask informed questions, provide context or share opinions.

  7. Some feedback.

Hopefully we get the Space sub-topic back again as it seems to have disappeared in the re-org. While there isn’t a lot of UK specific news it’s a critical and increasing enabler for defence. More coverage on US news in this area, since it is likely to be leveraged by UK forces, would probably help educate on this topic. Probably more relevant than posting news releases on BAES USA sales contracts. Cyber and C4ISR are similarly important.

Maybe take a look at how the International section of the website works. The drop down list when ‘hovering’ is only a subset of the regions covered once you click through, maybe make them consistent. Once in the section, clicking on the different regions has different website behaviour. For example click on Africa then click on Caribbean to see the differences.

The Osint Bunker seems like its analysis and opinion, so logically it would be a sub-section under the Analysis category?

  8. What about seperating News, Opinion and Cheeky tweets designed to annoy the French that get taken out of context? 😀

  9. “Factcheck” are the tool de jour for propaganda – starting with what they refuse to factcheck – so no this is not a good move.

I’ll keep checking for adjectives in “news”…i see them a lot.
