The Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the procurement branch of the UK Ministry of Defence, has secured a £3.1 million contract to improve the care and training of over 500 military working dogs, according to an official announcement.

The five-year contract has been awarded to Surrey-based Small Medium Enterprise (SME), Von Wolf K9 Sport & Service Dog Equipment Limited, with the option to extend it by two more years.

Military working dogs, ranging from breeds like German Shepherds to Springer Spaniels, serve across various branches, including the Army, RAF, Ministry of Defence Police, and MOD Guard Service. These dogs play crucial roles in detecting explosives, arms, and drugs, and providing protection for their handlers both at home and abroad.

The newly signed contract, dubbed the ‘Canine Support Solution,’ will not only ensure the welfare of these highly-trained animals but will also provide them with essential training and protective gear.

This includes items such as goggles to protect their eyes, hearing protection, safety boots, and cooling vests, among other equipment designed to enhance their work efficiency and safeguard their health during operations. Additionally, the contract supplies everyday essentials such as leads, bowls, harnesses, and toys to keep the dogs active and stimulated.

Liam Brown, SEEC Operations Manager at DE&S, spoke of the importance of this agreement, stating, “The welfare and security of all Military Working Dogs and handlers is of paramount importance to us. This contract with Von Wolf will enhance our offering by catering to their needs and specific requirements in the most efficient way.”

Sally Dickinson, Director at Von Wolf K9 Sport & Service Dog Equipment Limited, expressed the company’s pride in securing the contract. “As a trusted partner to the Ministry of Defence, we are incredibly proud and excited to be awarded this contract. It underscores our commitment to providing the best possible support to the UK’s military working dogs.”

The new agreement will ensure that the MOD continues to meet the welfare requirements outlined in the Government’s Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) Code of Practice for dog welfare. The contract is expected to enhance both the day-to-day life and operational readiness of military working dogs, reinforcing their role in maintaining national security.
