The F135 engine, which powers the F-35 Lightning II, has surpassed one million flight hours, marking a significant milestone in its operational history, according to a press release from Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX.
Pratt & Whitney states that the F135 engine has been a critical component of the F-35 programme since the aircraft’s first flight in 2006, supporting U.S. and allied forces.
“The F135 engine plays a critical role in maintaining global air superiority for the U.S. and its allies, as it enables the F-35 mission in even the most contested environments,” said Jill Albertelli, president of Military Engines at Pratt & Whitney.
The company highlights the engine’s reliability, safety, and readiness rates, stating that it exceeds full mission capability requirements of 94% and maintains an exceptional safety record compared to previous generations of fighter engines.
The F135 sustainment network supports global depot facilities, 36 bases, and 12 ships, providing logistical and maintenance infrastructure for international F-35 operators. Pratt & Whitney states that this network aligns with the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept, which relies on dispersed operational locations to enhance survivability and combat power projection.
Looking ahead, the F135 Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) is expected to enhance the engine’s performance in line with the F-35’s ongoing modernisation efforts. Pratt & Whitney states that the ECU will build on the F135’s existing capabilities to ensure the fighter jet remains competitive against future threats.
To date, more than 1,300 F135 production engines have been delivered to 20 allied nations.

The engine issues are solved ?
Slightly off subject but in ref to F35Bs. Would it be possible for the UK to purchase the licence for the F35B and build them here in the UK? Or at least the licence to produce spares. Yes I know about the start up cost but here is the what happens if. What happens if the US with Trump and Musk stops the production of F35Bs. What happens if the US with Trump and Musk stop the supply of spares. What happens if the US does have a kill switch. Possibly LM could build the F35s here in the UK for Europe independent of the US. It would solve the issue of threats from a third party cutting the supply.
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s then conceptual Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) launched an attack against Pentagon’s modern fighter jets, saying that drones were the future of air combat. Elon has recommended, and Trump has agreed, that the F-35 needs to be cancelled. This is a $2 trillion fighter program that is already obsolete. In the era of drone warfare, it is crazy to be spending $2 trillion (or more) over decades on a plane that is not needed.
Trump reportedly told Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet that he plans to cancel the $1 trillion F-35 contract because ‘China is winning the fighter race’ while the company ‘sends executives to DEI camps (Times now digital).
Although these comments were made three months ago (12/12/2024) so before he took office as President we need to be prepared for anything. One of the things that I learnt was never say something unless you are willing to carry it through.
If Trump did carry out the threat of scrapping the F35 project it leaves the RN in a pickle. Possibly it is time that the MoD looks into the possibility with design and cost calculations of rebuilding our carriers with Cats and Traps. Or at least Traps for STOBAR capability, then we could as a minimum use the Rafale M until we sort something better.
Sorry I asked on this thread but I could not find a place to ask the questions.
It undeniable that F-35 program is lesson in how to not make things if you have a peer competitor.
Everything moves too slow – Engines and Software. How many years to get Meteor integrated?
Side note UK build several components for it, but do not have an assembly line and a MLU like Italy.
Hypercomplex weapons systems are being challenged by simple ones: Iran/Houthis.
Of course a part of it is political, since there are no attacks to Iran it can keep playing the game.
