Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) Ltd has announced the appointment of Graeme Thomson as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Graeme Thomson, who previously oversaw the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigate programme at Babcock, will assume his new role on 1 May 2025, taking over from interim CEO John Petticrew.
Bringing over 20 years of experience in shipbuilding, construction, and energy, Thomson has held key leadership roles at Seaspan Shipyards, BAE Systems, and Ledcor. His career has been defined by delivering high-value, complex programmes, major operational improvements, and workforce expansion projects.
At Ferguson Marine, his immediate focus will be on completing the long-delayed CalMac ferry, MV Glen Rosa, and securing a sustainable future for the yard, which remains Scotland’s last commercial shipbuilder.
A New Chapter for Ferguson Marine
Thomson steps into the role at a pivotal time for the shipyard, which has endured years of financial and operational challenges. His background in delivering major naval projects is seen as key to restoring confidence in Ferguson’s ability to deliver on time and on budget.
Speaking on his appointment, Thomson emphasised his commitment to revitalising the yard:
“I’m thoroughly excited and enthused to be taking on the role as CEO of Ferguson Marine, a cornerstone of Scotland’s rich maritime history and an important employer in Inverclyde. The business, and its people, have faced challenging times but as we look forward, we must focus on delivering key contracts that demonstrate our capability to exceed expectations and build world-class ships on the Clyde.
This, and our commitment to building a better culture based on accountability and robust governance, will enable us to put past issues behind us, restore Ferguson Marine’s reputation, and realise its potential as a leader in global shipbuilding. I’m looking forward to getting to know the team better and working together to modernise the yard to meet the demands of the shipbuilding market for years to come.”
A Crucial Appointment for the Future of the Yard
Andrew Miller, Chairman of the Board at Ferguson Marine, welcomed Thomson’s appointment, highlighting the strategic importance of his experience:
“We are delighted to welcome Graeme Thomson as our new CEO. Graeme is a trusted and experienced leader with a sharp and intelligent business focus. He brings to the role a diverse background of experiences and an excellent track record for delivery in the shipbuilding and construction industry.
He joins us at a crucial time for our business, and the Board believes he will be instrumental in achieving the goals set out in our strategy and, crucially, delivering long-term growth for Ferguson Marine.”
Securing Ferguson Marine’s Future
Ferguson Marine’s reputation has been under intense scrutiny due to delays and cost overruns on government-backed ferry projects, which have raised concerns about the future of Scottish shipbuilding. With the yard’s long-term sustainability at stake, Thomson’s ability to deliver on key projects like MV Glen Rosa will be a critical test of Ferguson Marine’s viability.
His background in naval and commercial shipbuilding—particularly his role in delivering the Type 31 frigates—positions him as a leader capable of stabilising and modernising the yard.
Interesting appointment. It could signal the preparation for MOD contracts at the shipyard.
A hopeful step in the right direction
Seeing how behind schedule the Type 31 program is running, why would anyone think this is a good hire?
We might be pleasantly surprise when we see Venturer. I’m sure Babcock will have used the extra time profitably and we will we a veritable Arleigh Burke rolled out 🙂
