Defence Secretary John Healey informed the House of Commons on 1 June 2026 of a training accident in northern Iraq the previous day, the UK Defence Journal understands.
Speaking during defence questions, Healey said: “With deep regret I should inform the House that a training accident occurred in northern Iraq yesterday.” He told MPs that the family had been informed and had asked for a period of grace before further details were released.
He added: “I know the thoughts of the House will be with the family and with the unit at this desperately sad time.”
The Ministry of Defence has not released further details at the family’s request. British forces operate in Iraq as part of the international coalition against Daesh and in support of the Iraqi security forces, with a presence that has included training and advisory roles.
