A Royal Air Force Sergeant has been praised for his quick actions in saving a Canadian tourist who fell into a ravine in Zion National Park, Utah, according to a news release.

The incident occurred during a challenging 12km hike known as ‘The Subway.’ Sergeant Benstead, based in Las Vegas as an RAF Liaison Officer, heard a cry before seeing the woman tumble into a wet riverbed.

Despite treacherous conditions of snow and ice, he rushed to her aid, realised she had severe injuries, and then ran several miles to find satellite service and call for help.

Speaking of his response, he was quoted as saying:

“My military training helped me stay calm and focussed on what I needed to do. I have taken part in many challenging expeditions and Adventure Training which has…helped build me as a robust character when faced with challenges.”

Thanks to his swift actions, an air ambulance was summoned to assist the woman. Rear Admiral Tim Woods, British Defence Attaché to the US, commended Sergeant Benstead, calling him “an absolute hero,” and adding:

“He went well above and beyond, and demonstrated incredible physical courage.”

Flight Lieutenant Timms, Officer Commanding Permanent Air Movements Detachment USA West, remarked:

“Sergeant Benstead’s actions…were simply exceptional. His valiant efforts embody the highest values and standards of the Royal Air Force…His professionalism and composure ensured the injured woman received the urgent care she required.”

The RAF notes that its personnel serve in diverse roles worldwide, including Liaison Officers based at Permanent Air Movements Detachments as part of No.1 Air Mobility Wing. These teams, say the RAF in the update, offer support for Air Mobility Force operations and assist UK command structures with planning and execution phases.
