Lockheed Martin has delivered the second AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar shipset for Japan’s Aegis System Equipped Vessel programme to the Japan Ministry of Defense, the company stated.
The equipment was supplied through Mitsubishi Corporation under a Direct Commercial Sale arrangement and forms part of Japan’s effort to field two large Aegis-equipped vessels designed to provide missile defence capabilities.
According to Lockheed Martin, the latest delivery follows the first shipment of SPY-7 radar equipment completed in June 2025. The company said meeting the delivery milestones demonstrates progress in providing the systems required for Japan’s new vessels.
Full system integration and testing of the second shipset will be carried out before the equipment is delivered to Japan for installation. The process is intended to reduce integration risks and support the planned commissioning schedule.
The Japan Ministry of Defense is acquiring two Aegis System Equipped Vessels, which are currently planned to enter service in Japanese fiscal years 2027 and 2028.
Chandra Marshall, vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin, said the delivery reflects the pace of work on the programme.
“The successful on-time delivery of all equipment for the second ASEV shipment showcases the speed at which we are delivering to our customers in Japan, while demonstrating the maturity and scalability of the SPY-7 radar.”

If these are going into the upgraded Mogami class frigates for the JMSDF what is Australia putting into theirs? I believe they were getting 11 ships.
These are not going into the Mogami class frigates.. the Japanese have jointed the heavy destroyer.. let’s reffuse to call a cruiser a cruiser club.. they will go into the new Japanese super destroyers, ASEV it massive.. measures 190 meters in length, 25 meters in width, and has a standard displacement of 12,000 tons (the full load displacement could exceed the 14,000 tons) some saying they could reach 20,000 tons fully loaded..
Heavy destroyer? Yes indeed, more like a cruiser. That is a serious ship! Any projections on cruising speed?
Smidge bigger than Bulwark/Albion.
And a smidge shorter to the BMT Elliada Strike MRSS at 200m.
17 , 000 tons full load displacement
Besides all their radars and missiles these two large Aegis Destroyers are shown with the 5″, two Phalanx’s and two 30mm, 2×8 mk41s (Naval News, 13 Mar). Not sure on DEWs. Just for contrast to the T83 images shown so far with a main 57mm, two 40mm and Dragonfire as well as mk41s. And i think 20000 tn versus 10000 tn here? Would the UK consider having an “XL”and “L” mix of the T83? One more regional amd heavily ABM focused with larger sensors and the smaller more for CSG or, just the one type?
But they are not cruisers…. Nope super destroyers.. because the Japanese cannot have cruisers.. even the Izumo-class 26,000 ton aircraft carriers are still destroyers.. I love the Japanese ability to pretend to completely ignore any reality they don’t like admit exists.. We have destroyers.. one of the worlds largest most powerful navies.. no we have self defence destroyer thank-you. Debt what national debt.. do you like our new hand crafted individualised manhole covers..
You do realize the Japanese are playing word games with us, right? In the native Japanese, the Kongos and every other ‘destroyer’ since WW2, is called an ‘Escort Ship’. It is us in the west who transmogrify ‘escort’ to mean ‘destroyer’. They, of course, know this and use it to disarm protests about rearmament.
Yes of course it’s all about face.
