A significant movement of US military assets to Diego Garcia has been observed in recent days, suggesting preparations for a major air operation.
The surge in activity follows the largest US military strikes in the Middle East since President Donald Trump took office in January, targeting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.
At least five B-2 Spirit stealth bombers and seven C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft have arrived at the remote Indian Ocean base or are en route, according to open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis of military flight tracking data.
The buildup comes as US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on Sunday that Washington will continue attacking Yemen’s Houthis until they halt their assault on commercial and military shipping in the Red Sea. The airstrikes, which the Houthi-run health ministry claims killed at least 53 people, mark a significant escalation in the conflict.
A US official told journalists recently that the campaign against the Houthis could last for weeks, raising speculation that the deployment of B-2 bombers to Diego Garcia signals a potential expansion of air operations.
Movements Identified by Open-Source Analysts
A significant buildup is happening in Diego Garcia
At least 5 USAF B-2 Spirits and 7 C-17A Globemaster IIIs have arrived over the last 3 days, or are currently en route to the island.

The military activity was first flagged by open-source intelligence (OSINT) specialist “IntelFrog” (@TheIntelFrog), a respected analyst who tracks military aircraft movements using publicly available data, including ADS-B flight tracking and ACARS messaging systems.
IntelFrog initially reported that at least 18 US Air Force KC-135 tankers were staged across the Pacific at Travis AFB (California), Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Hawaii), and Andersen AFB (Guam). The presence of so many tankers at multiple bases simultaneously suggests the pre-positioning of aerial refuelling assets—a necessary step before a large-scale deployment of strike aircraft.
IntelFrog further noted that a number of tankers had moved from Guam to Diego Garcia, while sections of B-2 stealth bombers were tracked in transit from Whiteman AFB to Diego Garcia. These movements are not typical and appear to be linked to an impending military operation.
Additionally, a large influx of C-17A Globemaster III transport aircraft has been observed arriving at Diego Garcia. Flight tracking data indicates that at least seven C-17s have landed at the base in the past three days, suggesting the transportation of personnel, supplies, and potentially munitions in support of the bomber deployment.
IntelFrog noted that the scale of these movements is unusual and points to preparations for a significant air operation.
US Expands Campaign
The timing of the Diego Garcia deployment coincides with recent US military strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, which have intensified in recent days.
The United States has been conducting airstrikes against the Iran-backed Houthis since late 2023 after the militant group began targeting commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea. These attacks have severely disrupted global shipping, forcing multiple major shipping companies to reroute vessels around Africa.
Washington has vowed to keep striking the Houthis until the group ceases its attacks on international shipping.
Previously, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the air campaign will continue for as long as necessary to ensure freedom of navigation through the Red Sea. According to Houthi officials, the latest round of US airstrikes killed at least 53 people, making it the largest US military operation in the region since Trump took office.
Diego Garcia’s Role
Diego Garcia, a British-controlled island in the Indian Ocean, has long served as a launch platform for US strategic bombers and long-range strike missions. The base played a crucial role in US-led operations during the Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan War, and it has been used to conduct airstrikes in the Middle East and South Asia.
The deployment of B-2 stealth bombers to Diego Garcia is significant, as the aircraft are primarily used for strategic, high-value target strikes. The B-2 is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions, and its low radar signature allows it to penetrate heavily defended airspace.
The presence of multiple B-2s, refuelling tankers, and C-17 transport aircraft suggests that the US is positioning itself for a sustained military operation. While official confirmation has not been provided, military analysts believe the deployment points to a likely expansion of US airstrikes against Houthi targets.
The bomber build up suggests the strike?
Or was it the f*cking morons on a whattsapp group that suggest an upcoming strike?
Yes, I’m sure we should be charging them for this as well as they are planning on charging us.
Jim, I am sure the US is paying the UK for their use of Diego Garcia.
No they don’t pay, they pay nothing. They are being very unfair to us, they are treating us very badly, they are taking advantage of us, they have not paid us anything since 1971. You got to pay, you got to pay your dues 😀

Not so much suggested but gave the date the time, how many and what…
The irrationality in those discussions is deeply concerning. Just couldn’t help themselves taking the opportunity to slag off the Europeans and how incapable of carrying out such operations we all are and claiming they are mostly doing it for the European’s benefit. Yes of course there is an element of truth most manipulated prejudice usually does. But let’s get it straight one they couldn’t do it on this scale if we didn’t rent them Diego Garcia.
Equally the US didn’t want European powers in the Pacific, this was to be their playground so why would Europeans develop the super carriers to do a back up job to the long range stealth bombers or indeed produce the large bombers themselves, they are mostly Pacific orientated power tools. Yet as they lecture us in the art of ‘knowing our place’ we are European powers and should concentrate on European defence where such tools just aren’t what’s needed. Equally don’t tell me the US are really doing this for jolly old Europe, they are doing it for their own ship’s protection, prestige, power projection and above all taking all that into the equation, to protect their Israeli mates. The duplicity and self serving rewriting, is a warning to us in all manner of relations with them which will just get more and more anti Europe and hostile and we need to get our act together because it doesn’t matter how we bend the knee Starmer style,(though we in the Uk have a little sway in so doing) or do as we are told, there will always be new and endless demands because as with Putin and co, it’s for internal consumption and hating freeloading foreigners has to be the message to MAGA extremists true or otherwise. Hate is their power even as Trump pr sells it as stopping wars even when they are being expanded and Biden is slagged off for not doing so ironically writing his strikes out of MAGA written history.
But Fox (or is it Ministry of Truth) is selling it as being open and true to the US people… or calling it a lie by a pinko lying hack if you are Hegseth or keeping stum and unavailable probably till he sobered up, once a colleague admitted it was all authentic.
When listening to the Trump’s words he did suggest that Iran would face his full fury. The problem in the Middle East really stems from US questionnless support for Israel and the US v Iran argument going back to the fall of the Shah and the Embassy siege. Trump/Hesgeth/Vance grasp of history is at best tenuous and seemingly based on US TV fiction.
Nick, Does 5 bombers suggest ‘full fury’?
It’s 25% of the B2 fleet.
It’s probably the entire B2 fleet that can deploy.
Absolute crap
Depends whether one believes that B2s are as lethal as the Americans like to boast of. Short of all out war Immsure they are more than enough especially combined with carrier types to do all they would want to do or are capable of anyway to meet agent Orange’s commands.
Plus of course what would Israel’s involvement be?
The B-1s, B-2s and B-52s are all reasonably lethal, depending upon the munitions load out. Not certain why BONES and BUFFs have evidently not been invited to participate in the campaign, probably as a consequence of the perceived or actual threat environment. Always have the view that very little is as intimidating as a BUFF’s exhaust trail–a certain indication that some party has aroused USAF’s competitive spirit.
Actually, this bombing campaign could be a fortuitous measure supporting the CSG25 deployment through Suez/Red Sea. Houthis will be preoccupied simply surviving, and less capable of causing significant mayhem to transiting vessels.
Any strike on Iran might make things spicy.
UK should stay out of it. We’ve got Ukraine and European security to worry about
Agree, not our concern. We should start getting our gas from Canada then let China worry about the Red Sea. Almost all UK physical exports by value fly out of Heathrow anyway.
Almost nothing except perishables (food stuffs) fly out on airplanes.
What on earth are you talking about? This is nonsense of the highest order. If the Iranians or their proxies managed to shut down any of these vital shipping lanes Europe incl UK would be in serious trouble, and we’d be begging the US to help sort. Even if are large portion of our fuel supplies didn’t come from there (they currently do), most of our allies would be badly effected, which would have serious knock-on effects economically for us.
Whether we get involved is entirely dependent on what happens. If the Iranians up the ante with attacks on shipping we (and EU) should contribute to upping the ante on them too. If they attempt to close the strait of Hormuz or other shipping lanes then we need to hit them with everything we’ve got.
The potential effects on the UK from conflict with Iran is orders of magnitude greater than the potential effects from the Ukraine-Russia conflict, especially since we’ve had 3 years to adjust and insulate from that.
Also, Iran is an ally / proxy of Russia, and is supplying Russia with munitions and helping them evade sanctions.
There are comments out there USN could also be moving another carrier into the area, I can’t see they need it for the Houtis.
Interesting that Trump considers the UK A bunch of free-loaders, but he’s happy to use our base(s)
What a stupid and ill-informed comment. Trump does not consider the UK a bunch of free-loaders. His completely inexperiemced Defence Secretary Hegseth does
Trump does not consider the UK a bunch of free-loaders. His completely inexperiemced Defence Secretary Hegseth does.
In his eyes the EU seems to be free loaders as they will benefit yet they are not helping this time to clear the Red Sea for transit, whilst the US and the UK are. The UK sending air tankers and I think Typhoons.
When the German Government sends a Warship the long way around the Cape of Africa to return home, rather than ‘ risk’ transiting through the Red Sea incase it’s actually called upon to respond to threats, I think the US has a point.
I guess a good joke is worth hearing twice boom, boom.
I see Trump denying he knew anything aboutit yesterday is today claiming nothing of importance was discussed blah, blah, blah. About sums up his decision making I guess, even deniability comes and goes at will, his supporters don’t care either way let’s be honest. Black and white are just variations of grey after all.
And his VP 😀
So Action Trump (with his gripping hair and realistic hands) might be preparing to bomb some stone age people in Yemen, back to the stone age?
He already has been seriously bombing the Houtis for a couple of weeks. Not sure of the stone ages but much of the Yemem still seems to be in the Middle Ages.
I wonder if the *&^%$” sucker sycophant creatures surrounding the orange man realise, that once agent orange has done his term and blown away, they may well end up with criminal indictment’s, for all their fucktard behaviour…
He will give them all mass pre-emotive pardons, though in some cases probably by auto pen if they have crossed him by questioning his choice of strippers. There is so much irruption especially from the likes of Bondi and Musk and lots of others if the Republicans do lose power will be under threat. The DoJ and arguably the Marshals and FBI are effectively being used as Trumps personal Brown shirts so any Democratic Administration will have to act decisively which if not careful will feed back into MAGAs memes of oppression again. This could get very seesaw which best case scenario is going to get vicious. Not sure playing nice is gonna work to turn things around, can they avoid civil war under that scenario?
Fine, the US will start charging for the four fighter squadrons and Refueling Wing it stations in the UK.
Still pretending to be American I see
It’s usually those who own the land who charge though I agree Trump certainly manipulated that little old tradition in his property deals like trying to extort money out of New York for the honour of building Trump Towers there because Trumps name would apparently be so appealing to everyone. Actually probably why he and Putin get on so well. Of course without those British bases it’s difficult to see how he truly supports his dodgy business mates in Israel.
Thick as mince MAGA. Can’t even use WhatsApp properly. You’d probably send the invoice to yourself.
US forces were in Europe to further US interests as the superpower to oppose the Soviet Union.
For their own interests, not just in defence of Europe/NATO.
Now they remain as it suits the US to keep them in Europe so it can project power.
You’re welcome to remove them.
Maybe the UK should start charging for:
Menwith Hill.
Akrotiri.
Ayios Nikolios.
Diego Garcia.
Ascension Island.
Lakenheath.
Mildenhall.
Feltwell.
Alconbury.
Molesworth.
Croughton.
Barford St John.
Welford.
Fairford.
US elements at Wyton and MoD Digby.
And the intelligence data from over 200 cable taps that GCHQ send to NSA, including NSAs biggest source of metadata, and the various GCHQ take from Europe and the Middle East, for which the UK is lead nation.
You’re welcome. US forces make use of our locations more than we do of yours.
I totally agree with your logic of course we in the U.K. unlike most of Europe were totally indebted to the US for all the money we borrowed to protect freedom at the outset of WW2 which was a deliberate policy to undermine our preeminent position on the world stage in the post war world. This was most clearly demonstrated in 1956 when the final nail in the coffin of our status at the top table by our great friend and then POTUS Mr Eisenhower.
Ultimately, none of this really mattered (we sucked it up) because US and U.K. interests were pretty much aligned and whilst the US dominated the U.K. still had a powerful military and industrial base that could on occasions demonstrates a level of capability and expertise that the US military admired.
However, in the 21st Century we have allowed ourselves to become totally dependent on US military capabilities whilst we have reaped? a peace dividend.
A simple example of this change is how in 1980 we instigated the Armilla patrol in the Gulf to protect oil exports. This was constantly at least 2 RN escorts and at times of tension more for over two decades. This was a tangible commitment to sharing the burden of maintaining and protecting our way of life.
This approach was maintained during the Somali pirate period but U.K. warship numbers were down but compensated for by other European navies. If you now look at the Houthi situation in the Red Sea the U.K. cannot maintain one suitable vessel on station and the rest of Europes commitment is less in number and the war fighting capability of some navies questionable.
3% of the vessels passing through the Red Sea are heading to or from the US but 40% + to Europe.
Whilst there is a clear link between this problem and the ongoing US support of Israel we cannot protect our own vessels as we did in the 1980s and 1990s.
Despite the very clear bravery of British forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan the US also questioned U.K. military leadership and capability in those two disastrous wars. A good friend would offer wise counsel during these periods even if that is not welcome but for reasons only Mr Blair will know we allowed ourselves to offer unqualified support. That is a sign of an unhealthy and unequal relationship and we need a PM that can articulate that over the coming decades we are going to take a more independent approach because the fix will take a long time and should be gradual for our own benefit.
Nobody stays in the White House forever so it is very possible that the US may become more rational but that should not stop our direction of travel, which must be to reinforce our military with 3% of gdp spent on defence enabling a gradual run down of US forces in the U.K. This is all possible if the burden is shared with likeminded nations in Europe and elsewhere. Where trade is concerned we need to show we are not to be messed with particularly when we have a pretty equal trading relationship with the US.
Longer term this will benefit ourselves, Europe and the US.
I my opinion. The build-up of US offensive air forces on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, If true. is probably a prelude to US & Israeli Forces taking out Iran’s N infrastructure. The Ratcheting up of war of words from USA & Israel vented against the Ultra Conservative Religious Iranian Dictatorship in recent weeks & days also the huge attacks against Iran’s North Yemen proxies. US IMO, is degrading North Yemen military strength before attacking Iran. My God attacking Iran will not be like the Iraq Gulf War or Afghanistan. The Iran has Large Regular armed Forces & a larger, with best kit irregular armed force. Million of Iranian citizens don’t like the Religious Dictatorship but if nation is attacked they may close ranks to defend it. By the way. if you didn’t know. Yemen was North Yemen & South Yemen and then their was a war that united the nation into one nation. Fast forward & North Yemen- Capital Sana’a, wants to stay separated from South Yemen, Capital Aden. If the US & Israeli attack on Iran happens. IMO only it will happen within next 6 days. Oh and Iran’s N Power plants where built to Russian design & Missile tech North Korean. All 3 nations are controlled by dictator or Dictatorships. I hope I a wrong?.
But us cannot destroy iranians nuclear site
Iranians nuclear and missil facilites and storage are deep, very deep underground, fordow is 90 meters deep under a moutain of granit and natanz 100 meters deep under zagros moutains…..
To quote James cartwright : there arent weapons to destroy those facilities at best US can block the entrantes for a few weeks nothing more.
A strike will make it garantee, iran will recover and go nuclear.
I read that the USAF developed earth penetrators to take out Yamantau and Konvinsky. Under thousands of feet of granite and quartz.
I doubt Iranian subterranean sites will be a problem if conventional versions of those weapons exist.
Actuellement no thèse magical weapons you r talking about doesn t exist and never will…..
Too bad orange will have to eat his words.
Actually.
GBU-57A/B MOP was what I had in mind.
Then there is the B61-11 nuclear variant, and the B61-13.
So yes, they do exist.
What they are actually capable of hopefully we never find out.
No, this is about Iran. This is sending a message to Iran to come to the negotiating table before the stated 60 days Trump gave them to come to the table to remove their nuclear program. A 2nd carrier strike group will be there with in a few days. You don’t all these assets to strike the Houthis.
Pipe dream not going to happen, iran will never surrender his program, and à military strike will not succeed to deny them a nuclear capability it is simply too late now….
Trump’s tried ultimatum with north korea and failled miserably, it will fail with iran again. Orange’s promised to end endless war in middle est, actually his warmongering will start the mother of all war and will bringue the very thing it want to prevent A NUCLEAR ARMED IRAN
Let us hope that George is invited into the room this time. Standby for another Emoji fest.
Kevin, the fleet of B2 bombers is a lot for fighting just Houthi, it is expensive over kill. A more likely target is near by Iran. It would be a tremendous opp for IDF to use the $8 billion in arms, weapons. The cost of an Iran attack would be restricted info. Maybe it might wind up in bathroom at M a L
