The Ministry of Defence has detailed the steps it is taking to safeguard British defence supply chains against the threat of Russian interference and sabotage.

In response to a written question from Helen Maguire MP (Liberal Democrat – Epsom and Ewell), Defence Minister Maria Eagle confirmed that the Department is closely tracking the impact of global conflicts, with particular focus on identifying “Russian content in our critical programmes and the supply chains that support them.”

“The Department is actively engaged in a range of activity to de-risk critical defence supply chain vulnerabilities,” said Eagle, adding that the aim is to ensure MOD can make “informed decisions around if and how to intervene.”

One key initiative cited is a recent joint MOD-industry wargaming event, aimed at simulating and preparing for supply chain disruption scenarios. The MOD also continues to collaborate with the National Protective Security Authority and international allies to keep defence suppliers informed of emerging threats.

The UK Government is also using the National Security and Investment Act 2021 to assess and mitigate risks posed by malign Russian ownership of UK-based assets where appropriate.

As concerns grow across NATO and the G7 over Russian hybrid tactics—including industrial espionage, cyberattacks, and economic coercion—the Ministry’s statements reflect an increasingly proactive posture towards supply chain resilience as a matter of national security.

The MOD has previously highlighted supply chain security as a critical element of its broader Defence Command Paper Refresh and recent Defence Reform agenda.

  1. A bit late isn’t it? Our sovereign manufacturing has been sold, we buy from multiple foreign sources US, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, Swedish etc we have no energetics or chemical industry, no chip production, No steel manufacturing left, no British engines all MTU, No truck, A vehicle, Hardly any radar, all government research facilities sold, all government ordnance facilities sold, everything privatised, research, recruitment, facilities management – IT is amazing what 35 years of ‘peace dividends’ and total lack of strategy or defence industrial planning can do to a country

    • “no chip production”…

  2. MoD is just now thinking of checking there are no Russian-origin components and software in our military kit! Unbelievable! Very hard to check this now and even harder to sort out the problem.

    • Really, you think Russian manufactured components would be used in any of our military kit? Even if the Russians manufactured anything U.K. to Western specifications, it would be excluded by the end manufacturers. The real scandal is that reverse is likely to be true, U.K. manufactured components being in Russian weapons systems. RUSI found this in 2022.

Trickier is software. I know of one American defence manufacturer having outsourced some software coding to an Eastern Europe company, only for that company to pass the work to some coders based in Russia. Though I imagine the biggest danger would be from sloppily written code rather than the kind of ‘back-doors’ beloved of Hollywood movies.

  3. Of course, the best way to protect UK supply chains is just to start ordering more stuff!

The biggest risk is not some attack against our supply chains, but said supply chains being clogged up because they physically can’t produce enough equipment when HMG orders it in in emergency, because they’re only set up to produce such small quantities.

Get some increased and sustained orders in to enable additional factories etc to be set up. The key word is sustained; sign contracts for 10-20 years of production, to give industry enough confidence to invest in expanding their production facilities.
