The Commander of NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), Major General Christophe Hintzy of France, briefed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and allied ambassadors in Brussels on the mission’s continued cooperation with Iraqi authorities, NATO said on Wednesday.

According to the organisation, Major General Hintzy outlined progress made through NMI’s advisory and capacity-building work, describing “fruitful cooperation developed with Iraqi counterparts” and highlighting the mission’s contribution to “lasting security in the country.”

NATO Mission Iraq is a non-combat advisory mission established at the request of the Iraqi government. Its role is to help Iraq build “more sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security institutions and forces” to strengthen national stability, counter terrorism and prevent the re-emergence of ISIS.

The alliance said Iraqi authorities have identified key areas of cooperation with NMI, including security education, logistics, cyber defence, budgeting, crisis and disaster management, and good governance.

NATO reaffirmed that all activities under the mission are conducted “in full respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
