A man who intervened to stop a potential terrorist attack outside a Leeds hospital has been awarded the George Medal for bravery.
Nathan Newby, 35, was presented with the award by King Charles III after preventing an attack at St James’ Hospital on 20 January 2023, according to Counter Terrorism Policing.
Newby engaged with Mohammed Farooq, who was armed with knives, an imitation firearm and an improvised explosive device. He persuaded him to move away from the hospital and kept him calm until officers arrived.
Farooq was later convicted of preparing acts of terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 37 years.
Detective Superintendent Paul Greenwood said: “Nathan Newby G.M.’s intervention that night prevented a potentially devastating attack on the hospital.” He added that Newby’s “remarkable bravery and calmness” had prevented significant loss of life.

Well deserved, balls of steel that man. Although its a pity the islamist survived the encounter.
I’d rather he was worm food than taking up space and taxpayer money in prison
Quite.
But in this case I’m glad that Farook survived. He clearly had doubts or he’d have just gone and martyred himself like the other fanatics.
He even told the lad to call the police once Newby had been talking to him before he changed his mind.
The camera footage showed the human being behind these extremists.
You have more faith in these animals than I do. I somehow doubt he is going to change his ways in prison, especially if he is put in one with these infamous muslim prison gangs that love to assault prison officers
But good for you, never lose that positivity 👍
I’d not call them animals, animals are far superior to most of us in this human race as far as I’m concerned.
Hey, I have no issue with shooting dead fanatics who hate our nation.
This one, showed he is human and had doubts, and he killed nobody.
I was trying to make this point on the other thread with Dern, nothing is black and white, there are exceptions to the stereotypes in all things.
Surely this meets the criteria for a George cross. The guy undoubtedly put himself at massive risk and prevented a mass casualty event.
If this doesn’t get you one, not sure what does?
Lisa Potts was also awarded the George Medal, confronting a machete wielding maniac attacking the children in her class.
So there must be some sort of ruling used?
Whatever, if I was in charge they’d get more than a medal.
That’s the thing. If you get the George cross you also get £10k per year for life. It’s seems churlish if they don’t hand them out just to avoid paying the stipend
Oh, I didn’t know that. Agreed.
