NATO forces have conducted a major mine countermeasures exercise in the Baltic Sea, bringing together ships and specialist units from multiple Allied and partner nations to test readiness and interoperability, NATO stated.
Exercise MCM Baltic, held from 9 to 20 March and led by the German Navy, involved minehunters from nine nations, including vessels assigned to Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1). The exercise focused on detecting, classifying and neutralising naval mines in a high-intensity, multinational environment.
Alongside mine warfare operations, participating crews carried out navigation drills and communications training to improve coordination across different national procedures. NATO said operating under common protocols enabled units to synchronise effectively during complex scenarios.
Minehunting activities included the use of underwater vehicles to identify potential threats, as well as clearance divers conducting identification and disposal tasks. These combined capabilities were intended to enhance situational awareness and ensure safe maritime operations in contested waters, according to NATO.
Commander SNMCMG1, Polish Navy Commander Kacper Sterne, said: “Exercise MCM Baltic demonstrated a high level of Allied readiness to respond to complex threats in a strategically important region. Through regular and realistic training, NATO continues to ensure maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea, underscoring Allied unity, determination and readiness.”
Participating SNMCMG1 vessels included the Polish Navy flagship ORP Kontradmiral Xawery Czernicki, German Navy ship FGS Fulda and Royal Netherlands Navy ship HNLMS Schiedam. The exercise also included cooperation with NATO’s newest members, Sweden and Finland, aimed at strengthening regional integration.

A picture paints a thousand words. This picture shows just how capable European NATO is as mine hunting and counter measures by the sheer number of ships in that picture (19)
Compare that to the USN that is currently imbedded in a nasty war where mines were identified as the biggest threat in every assessment for 40 years and it has a grand total of 1 LCS in the Indian Ocean with one mine counter measures system onboard.
All while Fox News is busy counting the number of VLS silos in an Arleigh Burke to prove how tough they are.
No wonder the Donald now needs NATO to come and clean up his mess.
