NATO has convened its first Arctic Space Forum in Helsinki, bringing together experts from Allied governments, industry and the innovation sector to examine how space-based technology can enhance security and resilience in the High North, the organisation stated.

The event, held on Wednesday, was opened by NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska and Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen. In her address, Shekerinska emphasised the growing importance of space assets for Arctic stability. “Space is becoming indispensable to how we keep the Arctic region safe,” she said.

Following the opening session, Shekerinska and Häkkänen were joined by the defence ministers of Norway and Denmark, and Iceland’s foreign minister, for a discussion on the Arctic’s strategic role in trade, transport and transatlantic communication. The ministers also addressed mounting challenges in the region, including the effects of climate change, intensifying geopolitical competition and Russia’s expanding military presence.

Participants explored how both military and commercial space-based systems could strengthen NATO’s surveillance, deterrence and defence posture in the Arctic. According to NATO, the discussions will help guide implementation of its Commercial Space Strategy, adopted in February 2025, which aims to deepen collaboration with the private sector in developing space solutions.

The forum, described by the Alliance as a platform to connect NATO with industry leaders and innovators, forms part of broader efforts to integrate space technology into Arctic security planning.

During her visit to Finland, Shekerinska also attended the Nordic Defence Cooperation ministerial meeting, visited the Merihaka civilian shelter, and met senior Finnish officials including Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.
