Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, attended the annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference in Hua Hin, Thailand, from 26 to 28 August, according to NATO.

The event was co-hosted by Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, and General Noonpackdee Songwit, Chief of Defence Forces of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.

This year’s theme was “Peace through Strength – Ensuring Security and Prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.”

Senior military leaders discussed regional security perspectives across Northeast, South, and Southeast Asia, as well as Oceania. The agenda also included non-traditional threats and the role of emerging technologies in addressing them.

Admiral Cavo Dragone said: “In an unpredictable, yet interconnected global security environment, Indo-Pacific likeminded stakeholders play a key role to preserve international stability. Today, and for our future generations. This is why it is more important than ever to foster dialogue with these Partners, learning from our respective strengths and interests, in a wide range of fields, inter alia industry cooperation, maritime- and cyber security.”

Talks also covered how the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions are increasingly linked, with focus on China and North Korea’s support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, as well as their strategic partnership with Moscow.

Admiral Cavo Dragone concluded: “Today, security is more global than ever, and the challenges we face are no longer bound by geography, so they need to be addressed based on shared common values grounded in the rules-based international order.”
