According to an update from the Ministry of Defence, the UK and Romania have expanded their defence relationship with the signing of a new treaty aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and supporting collective security within NATO.
Defence Secretary John Healey MP and his Romanian counterpart, Angel Tîlvăr, signed the agreement at the Ministry of Defence in London on 13 November 2024.
The treaty highlights both nations’ shared commitment to maintaining peace and security in Europe, improving the effectiveness of their armed forces when operating together, and enhancing information sharing. “This agreement demonstrates how quickly the UK’s defence relationship with Romania is growing and it shows our shared commitment to peace and security in Europe,” Healey stated during the signing.
The UK and Romania have worked closely for many years, and this new agreement aims to further strengthen that collaboration. Notably, Romania has supported the UK’s training efforts for Ukraine, with Romanian personnel helping train over 45,000 Ukrainian recruits as part of Operation Interflex.
“The UK’s security starts in Ukraine, and, together with Romania as our NATO allies, we will continue to support Ukraine against Putin’s illegal invasion,” Healey added.
As part of the agreement, a joint defence committee will be established to reinforce the partnership and better address shared security threats. In addition to their joint commitment to Ukraine, the UK and Romania have undertaken several collaborative exercises.
Earlier this year, the Royal Air Force deployed a Typhoon squadron to Romania for NATO air policing missions, and in recent months, the British Army participated in Exercise Sarmis, training alongside Romanian forces in the Carpathian Mountains.

What an absolute crock. You have no right to sign treaties without a public referendum. How about you send them their criminals and welfare tourists home first?
We are already obligated to defend Romania via our NATO membership for the last 20 years…
What gave you that impression? The UK is a Parliamentary democracy, no referendum is needed for the signing of bilateral treaties.
Under what legal framework is your argument based on? There is no legal or political necessity to have a referendum to sign such treaties. We do not have a political system (a few Countries do) that is based on the concept of governance by referendum. Those we do have are very much exceptional and often for political expediency and even then is generally based on convention not a legal requirement and limited to a radical re alignment of the status quo of the state or constituent parts at the discretion of the Govt and upon a vote supported more generally… Read more »
Sick of military filth fighting for others while lying to the British. Making targets of us whilst claiming to be defending us so as to “justify” us picking up the bill for their international globalist wet work. Truth be told the British military have NEVER actually fought for US, NEVER.
What you really mean mucker is you haven’t done any fighting, ex Royal Navy myself.
Look simply put only by Europe sticking together do we have any chance of being able to defend ourselves against Russian, Chinese or even North Korean and Iranian expansionism. Waiting till the enemy is at the English Channel means we have long since lost the war and prospects beyond that very grim indeed. Not sure what aligning with Romania has to do with fighting for America. The exact opposite indeed I would claim.
The military does what the government tells it to do. Do you want to live in a world where it doesn’t?
Are you ok? You’re very angry about pretty much nothing!
Hey Airborne – how are you Mate? it’s been a while.
