The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has confirmed that no 30mm cannon rounds or 155mm artillery shells have been reported lost or stolen from its facilities since 5 July 2024.

The response came following parliamentary questions from James Cartlidge MP, Shadow Defence Secretary, who sought clarification on the security of military munitions.

In a written statement, Luke Pollard, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Defence, assured that the MOD takes the security of Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) very seriously and has robust procedures in place to deter, detect, and prevent any loss or theft.

“A search has been undertaken against the Defence Incident Management Database (DIMDb), which is the single repository for all security incident data for Defence. No incidents have been raised for the loss or theft of either 30mm cannon rounds or 155mm artillery shells within the timeframe requested,” Pollard confirmed.

The Defence Incident Management Database is the central system for recording all security incidents across the MOD, ensuring that all losses or thefts are fully and rigorously investigated.

The question comes amid wider discussions about ammunition stockpiles, security, and resupply efforts—particularly in the wake of UK military support to Ukraine and concerns about defence readiness.

While the MOD’s response indicates no recorded incidents, the scrutiny of ammunition security and procurement remains a key focus for opposition MPs pressing the government on military preparedness and supply chain resilience.

  1. No 155mm shells have been stolen.. I should think not. Considering the death and destruction a detonated 155mm shell could cause if one was stolen it should be senior level head rolling event.

  2. However nothing has been said about the easier to steal 105mm! It’s the next level of gang warfare between our most wonderful and patriotic youth gang and drill culture, don’t bring a machete to an arty strike fight!

  3. It’s strange what can disappear, back in the 1950’s a long term employee of a British Aircraft Engine manufacturer sadly passed away. A few weeks after the funeral the personnel department got a call from his widow to ask if the company still needed to store a large item in her cellar, which had been down there since the war. He’d told her it was all part of the Governments plan for dispersal of production and he was storing it in case of invasion.
They were rather surprised to find out that the former employee had decided to build an entire engine, by smuggling it out one bit at a time. The biggest mystery was never solved which was just how the hell he managed to get the V12 block out.

Paperwork for taking it to scrap?

Joking apart the country was awash with Merlin engines post war – they were everywhere.

Knew a guy, long dead, who had one on a powerboat!

      Scrap yards everywhere had them.

  4. Why does Cartlidge ask these random and bizarre questions, singling out the loss of just two types of munition. He should ask decent questions about reviving our military capability across all the domains.

    • Because those are the ones he knows went missing under his watch, would be my guess.

Side note my L29A1 paperweight would argue all you had to do was ask nicely
