More than 500 United States armed forces personnel have undertaken training in the United Kingdom since 2020 across a range of military institutions.
In a letter to Jeremy Corbyn MP, Defence Minister Alistair Carns set out figures showing that 501 US personnel attended training courses in Britain between 2020 and 2025. Annual totals rose from 54 in 2020 and 56 in 2021 to a peak of 120 in 2023, before falling slightly to 105 in 2024 and 101 in 2025.
Carns said: “The Ministry of Defence offers a very broad range of International Defence Training to our partners. Information regarding the provision of training to the US Armed Forces is therefore spread across a range of sources and providers across Defence.”
Training was delivered across multiple establishments, including the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and RAF Cranwell for officer training, as well as the Royal College of Defence Studies and the Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham.
Additional courses were conducted at a range of specialist schools and operational units, including the Defence Intelligence Academy, Defence Logistics School at Worthy Down, Royal School of Artillery, and the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School in Warminster. RAF stations including Halton, Marham, Lossiemouth and Cosford also hosted training activity.
The Ministry of Defence noted limitations in the available data. Carns stated that: “Information is taken from a database of International Defence Training. Some activity may not be captured on that database.”
He added that a detailed breakdown of trainee numbers by institution could not be provided, “as doing so would risk breaching data protection principles.”
