In a display of solidarity and support, personnel from the Royal Air Force, stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, participated in a 25km run on the 23rd of December.

This event was organised to raise funds for a vital operation for Corporal Andy Layton, a former Weapons Technician.

Corporal Layton suffered a severe brain haemorrhage over two years ago, leaving him unable to talk, eat, or walk. The event, coordinated by II (AC) Squadron, was aimed at covering the cost of a treatment known as Phagenyx, which is hoped to restore Layton’s throat function and his ability to swallow.

“The 25kms of Christmas Fun Run is one of a number of fundraising events that the Squadron and others across the RAF have organised to help Andy get the treatment he needs. Andy is a friend and a popular member of the Squadron so this cause is clearly close to our hearts, and the response from everybody out here and back home has been outstanding,” said Warrant Officer Grimshaw-Else from II (AC) Squadron in a press release.

At the time of his hospitalisation, Andy’s wife, Helen, was three months pregnant. Their daughter, Lyra, was born in November 2021. Despite numerous treatments, Andy struggled to regain control of his throat. The couple initially used personal savings for the Phagenyx treatment, which led to significant improvements in Andy’s condition. However, a further round of treatment is needed but comes at a cost they currently cannot afford.

“This run is a big challenge but more than worth it when we know that all donations will have a significant impact on Andy and his family’s life,” added Warrant Officer Grimshaw-Else.
