I will. This is the go to place for UK Defence matters where I can talk with like minded people.
Not sure what you pay down your way M8 but it’s about the price of 3 🍻a year round here. So I’m in !
Mind you I do hope a couple of muppets depart 🥴
It’s really a trifling amount. We pay a similar annual amount for several amateur art societies we are involved with.
And I, personally, would chip in more to see UKDJ continue.
Yes, there are different levels in the quality of the input from commentators!
Are you going to change the format if its going to a subscription service? The addition of likes/dislikes and ability to edit ones post when its past the time limit already in the setting? Links to reference material and posters photos etc.
Sorry, follow up George. I cannot have Facebook (or any other social media) on account of my job. How can I subscribe?
We have this option. https://www.patreon.com/ukdefencejournal/membership
If newspapers and journals are zero rated, and the predominant benefit of subscription is more of the same, are you sure it’s correct to charge VAT on subscriptions?
Ignore this. The reference to VAT was a red herring not followed through on the next page.
As I’m a monkey do you accept bananas and monkey nuts
Done mate
This takes me to a Facebook log in. I’m not on Facebook and I don’t want to be. Any other routes to subscribe? How about I buy a dozen mugs and get a free year’s subscription?
We have this option. https://www.patreon.com/ukdefencejournal/membership
Thank you.
Same here.
Is this going to provide an advert free site for subscribers? It should do.
I don’t use FB for a wide range of reasons……..
Only if we managed to get thousands of subscribers.
I am happy to do this George et. al. But, like others, social media is distasteful. The link to patreon says £2+VAT which my keen math skills tells me £2.40 per month. I am not short of money but please clarify; is that patreon overhead etc.
It should be in dollars, what is the exact amount you see and I can modify it.
I just used the non-Facebook link to subscribe & it was £2 monthly subscription. Didn’t notice any mention of VAT. No sign of 99p/month.
I was the same, there was a 2 quid option. Don’t grudge it, just flagging it up.
Even at checkout it says £2 for me
Patreon should be fixed now.
Will there be a once-a-year option, George?
I like this kind of thing to go out in January so I only get one ginormous bank statement, and can keep track.
TBF I’d also be happy with a somewhat larger amount – say double.
Thanks
Hopefully, if we survive next year, costs will be very high, so we will need to see what form we exist in as of January.
Maybe you should set out UKDJ’s costs base so we can all understand it…..maybe a few people and companies would chip in more.
Running a website isn’t cheap with all the cloudy server capacity and licences for various bits.
Maybe 99p or £2 /month is too little?
I for one am happy to contribute more, bear it in mind mate.
An option to take out an annual subscription would be most helpful.
Excellent value for money. Wishing George & the UKDJ team all the best for the future, keep it up.
Done, and money well spent, thank you George and the crew!
Kind of O/T but George would you consider trying to interview one of the defence-related MPs of the major party’s in the runup to the election? We know the partys are going to have debates on TV but I doubt defence will be thoroughly covered and you’ve done more than enough to establish yourself as a credible defence journalist.
Not too far off topic, as when I joined Patreon it asked what I was looking forward to seeing and that was the way my mind went too. We’ve had Mr Docherty-Hughes’ views, but most of us can’t vote SNP. We had that short piece from John Healey talking country before party, and more from him would be good. Richard Foord from the Lib Dems (ex-army) and Fredrick Chedham for Reform (also ex-army). Perhaps Big Ben could weigh in for the Tories as a party grandee of leisure.
Starmer was on R4 Today last week, he kept going on about Country before Party. Which did make me take notice because saying things like that get you kicked out of the Tory Party these days.
A dream of course but if only George could interview the party leaders, and ask one straight and simple question !
“Well Mr X, I write about U.K. Defence, can you assure me of having a secure future by expanding it a bit ?” 🤷🏼♂️
Joined Patreon.
Me too
Hi George. More than happy to subscribe. i just need to work out how to do it from SA and would echo others request to do an annual payment. i will go into the link you have provided and get some help from my kids if it becomes too much for me 🇿🇦😆
I’m confused
Does this mean that there will be a new forum to comment on or that the comments section will close?
If subscribers get articles earlier, will non-subscriber s have to wait a few days to get news?
I’m not in a position where I’m able to subscribe like that due to my age, so I’m worried I’ll lose some of the excellent content I’ve been getting over the past year.
Yes, I’m curious anout this.
Will we have to log in?
Otherwise what’s the difference, any non member can still see the site?
It’ll be extra to what’s seen here. The content here isn’t going to change, but the main reason is to help us keep the content here in the first place. It’ll evolve over time.
Some deep background articles on each of the five domains would be useful. Space and Cyber/Digital aren’t perhaps as well covered in the press as they might be. Something that would take a beginner in that domain to where they would better understand the background behind UKDJ news content and the comments. Sometimes they get a bit intense if you come from outside the area.

Hi George,
I’ve taken the Patreon route so used the same name and email address that I use here so that single signon (SSO) would work.
I hope your platform technicians have built a SAML SSO authentication function with FB and Patreon…
The Patreon ukdj page doesn’t link to this platform or any different add on content so I hope that’s intended because the SSO will allow Identification of the paid and nonpaid subscribers?
Obviously if I have misunderstood some of this, that argues for more explanation 😄
I’ve joined with a great deal of pleasure. You’ve done a great job here George, many thanks.
Of course, its under my real name, I’m not really a Grinch!
George you and your team do a cracking job so no probs ! Just a question but when other sites use links to your content do you get a fee ?
Oh and an “Oliver” moment, please Sir can we have an update on how the T31 builds are going because it seems very quiet up the M8, Q1 in the water has come and gone. 🤔
Subscribed via the FB option.
99p.
Cheap! Got to be a couple of quid surely.
They recommended £3.99 when setting up but we’re just out to cover costs, not make money.
Ok. That’s the main thing, and good to know.
Take costs and double them… you’ll then cover the costs 😉 That’s what I found out when guesstimating costs.
An annual option would be good. Happy to pay more. Went on yesterday but, can’t access any content at the moment.
