The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has confirmed ongoing discussions with NATO allies and partner nations regarding Ukraine’s security and the potential structure of a peacekeeping force, should one be required.

In response to a parliamentary question from Rebecca Paul, MP for Reigate, Defence Minister Luke Pollard outlined recent diplomatic and military engagements focused on securing Ukraine’s future.

“The Defence Secretary and the Chief of the Defence Staff met with counterparts in Paris last week to discuss the next steps for a coalition of the willing to defend Ukraine’s security – with 37 nations attending the military meeting, alongside NATO and EU representatives,” Pollard stated.

The discussions included European and transatlantic leaders, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosting a call on 15 March with European counterparts, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and other world leaders to assess ongoing military support and security guarantees for Ukraine.

Further military planning meetings took place on 20 March, focusing on practical steps for how allied forces can contribute to long-term security arrangements for Ukraine.

While specific details on the size, composition, or remit of any future peacekeeping force have not been publicly disclosed, these high-level discussions indicate active coordination between Western allies on post-war security frameworks for Ukraine.

The UK has remained a leading voice in supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression, providing significant military aid, training, and intelligence support. The question of a potential NATO-backed peacekeeping force has been raised in recent months, but no formal deployment has been confirmed at this stage.

  1. Nobody cares what the UK does. There will be no European peace keepers in the Ukraine. Only the US and Russia matter in this affair.

    • At least that’s how USA and Russia wants it.
I don’t believe any of the two have a say about what European countries will do. This is not within their reach.

      • Oh really. Both Starmer and Macron have stated that European “peacekeepers” will require a back-up commitment from the US military, something Trump has refused to do. Sending a European peacekeeping force into Ukraine without US back-up is criminal negligence.

      • Only way European ‘Peacekeepers’ are going into Ukraine is by invitation of the US to defend its mineral extraction sites and agreed infrastructure as part of a peace deal such as nuclear plants.

USA is going to drain Ukraine of resources and the security expenses of doing so will be on Europe, we are going to be well and truly legged up with this one. Once the minerals are gone, US will go and Russia will either lose interest or swallow up the rest of the country in another ‘military exercise’

    • Utterly deluded nonsense from the wannabe dictator attempting a mafia protection racket. His organised crime credentials are impeccable ‘the best you’ve ever seen’.

He knows that he has no leverage with the FSB so tries to intimidate Ukraine who have significant dependance on USA.
His attempted capitulation to RF also hasn’t leverage with a nation that has given so much blood and treasure over three years high intensity war and almost a decade of low intensity hybrid war. Whatever #47 claims for personal gratification, his only leverage is to surge support to Ukraine so that the FSB have to accept that their military and economic losses are insurmountable and defeat inevitable.

They’re a very long way from that now since dictatorship is built on delusion and incompetence. So the lesson must be brutal and obvious.

  2. The longer Trump ignores the wider Europe, the more European stated interests may diverge from the Trump, Putin mafia proceedings. Both are likely to expect and want the EU stated intentions to dissolve into prevarication and indecision to confirm it’s irrelevance in their world view. If we, the UK and the EU really do get organised expect a Trump spiteful revenge. The strategic risk it seems is that Ukraine is left with two choices, either give themselves away to Trump or be given away by Trump to Russia.
A third choice, a UK/ EU centric one may only be won by the high possibility of a continental war. Heaven help us.

    • The alternative prevarication manouver will also lead to war. I don’t see how a peace deal made by Russia and US in disfavor of all European security concerns do not lead to war. US can no longer speak on our behalf when it threaten to invade Greenland, Canada, claim alignment with Russia and say it leaves Russia do whatever they want to European countries.
Things do not work this way, never will. If it did, it would mean that we are no longer willing to exists.
Are you ready to bend? I am not, nor do I want my country to bend.

    • Europe sees that This USA is unreliable. Germany and UK won’t tolerate that. France will say CDG Told you so.

We must take the initiative in European NATO command to send the American staff home and lead for the interests of all European people.

There can be no influence for a country that will not uphold Article 5, especially no membership veto for USA.

They said they won’t support Article 5 so European NATO countries will take that duty and decide what security guarantees will be given to Ukraine.

We already started with Joint Expeditionary Force and Advanced Forward Presence.

      • A poll conducted in the UK recently revealed that about half of Brits consider that the US is no longer an ally.

  3. An increase in troops numbers has got to be considered. Feels like the subject of increasing troop numbers is completely ignored by the government.

Yet alot of high ranking officers, both serving and retired, have stated we need more troops.

  4. putin has been quite clear, no NATO country troops

starmer doing what blair tried to do, and he’l just end up with the same result, military defeat, british lives squandered for nothing

    • Putler will do nothing. He’s not as strong as people think. Really wish we had more people with balls in the West.

    • Putin has already employed N Korean, Chechen toops etc, so his demand on no NATO has no value. Either we provide the force Putin has to respect, defeati g & driving out Russian forces from UKR or we allow him to take UKR & give him time & space to move on until he takes every ex-Warsaw Pact country or dies of old age.

      • You want to negotiate with Putin on the basis of respect?! The guys a shameless deluded lunatic, cant reason with that.

      • I am afraid European nations will be ignored because this is all about hard power and the continent doesn’t have what it takes to tell the Yanks to walk away and the Russians to get out. The U.K., France and Germany can say they are going to increase their armed forces but they are required today and not in 2, 3 or 5 years time so Ukraine is stuffed and needs to agree the best deal it can. They then need to rearm for a future conflict.
Europe has forfeited its right to control its own borders because the peaceniks have destroyed what you need for peace, ‘A big stick’.

        • Trouble is part of the peace deal Russia wants to agree to is Ukraine effectively being defenseless against any future aggression, its going to be very difficult to get Russia to stop the shooting war with Ukraine rebuilding an effective military of its own.

    • It’s never been an RF decision what NATO does, he just repeats FSB talking point in the hope that Goebels was right that the gullible believes lies that are repeated often enough.

What the sovereign democratic nation of Ukraine decides for it’s own defence and security is none of his business.
Neither is it a decision for the wannabe dictator of another country that fails to uphold its obligations under the Budapest memorandum or UN Charter.

  5. I believe Jens Stoltenberg is now the Norwegian Finance Minister; Mark Rutte took over as NATO Secretary General on 1st Oct 2024.

  6. Hubris a mortal sin where the price is paid by others. Starmer needs a reality check, Putin’s man in the White House has sold Europe down the river and it is too late to do anything about it. We should never trust the Yanks again, once Trump Snr is gone nothing will change over there and Putin will be replaced b y a bigger nutter so we had better get real in the time we have left.

  7. I’ve said it multiple times now we should never have given up BAOR yet again we go down as blundering through history. If we had those numbers and resources available to us right now we would be natural leaders to run NATO and let USA have it’s tantrum.

  8. How things go depends on Zelensky. Note that the limited cease fire which has been agreed covers only the electricity network. In exchange for technical and financial help and hopefully continued weapons supply, Trump is effectively offering to buy Ukraine’s electricity generation and distribution; which needs protecting and rebuilding. We in the UK privatised electricity generation and water a long time because the govt was broke; we needed private capital to rebuild and the govt didn’t want to raise taxes. Notwithstanding that customers are now being screwed by water rates I can’t see much difference. The success of Trump’s deal strategy rests on the belief that Putin will not attack US owed assets. Starmer’s inflammatory proposal for a peacekeeping force serves only the purpose of motivating Putin to accept Trump’s proposal. That said Europe should make sure that Ukraine is sufficiently well armed to defend itself within whatever territorial boundaries result from negotiations.

    • Why would Putin attack the US assests he is making a packet still selling Gas to the pearl clutchers in the EU moralising on one hand and still buying Russian Energy on the other hand. That’s exactly why we’ve been left out of the discussions the USA, Russia and China are carving the world up for resources that is the real play going on right now despite the bluster from Europe we are not a serious entity we are pushing the green movement by buying solar panels and windmills from Coal using China lol that is why we aren’t taken seriously and are effectively sat at the kids table.

      • Yep, fair summary of what’s going on: the US and Russia squeezing out the EU as they react to the rise of China as the new kid on the block in the world order. Meanwhile the UK is trying to carve out a role and promote itself as an independent ‘global’ ( but still Atlantic NATO) player. There are some signs that the UK, GY and FR might coalesce as the core of a sort of new European Defence Community. But given the French perspective of the EU as kind of evolution of the French republic and their desire to protect their defence industries, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Be interesting to see the influence of Friedrich Merz; it looks like Germany have taken the gloves off re-armament.

  9. I do t think we should be deploying peacekeepers too Ukraine. It’s not because I don’t think Ukraine should have it’s democracy or freedom it’s because of the risks of triggering a wider conflict.
Russia’s red lines no one cares about, Russia stating they won’t tolerate NATO countries for es in Ukraine is also irrelevant because Russia has conscripted mercenaries from all over the world and used Chechen and North Korean forces.
It’s just because the UK government in the 3+ years of conflict hasn’t lifted a finger to rearm and prepare for an inevitable conflict with Russia. If we’d begun rearming the minute Putin invaded Ukraine we would now be in a stronger position.
I’m not getting any hints the government are going to do anything but more of the same with SDSR 2025. I’m expecting virtually zero uptick in the armed forces woeful head count or numbers of warships, subs, aircraft, tanks, ifvs, artillery etc
What is needed is frankly to follow France’s lead and double the military.
Next issue is people remember. They remember useless shitty governments and their utter disdain for the UK population, our hopes ambitions and wishes to have better infrastructure, better roads, better trains, better hospitals, repaired schools, decent social care, affordable elderly care etc so why should they expect young men and women to voluntarily join up and risk their lives to fight for this country.

  10. Who has been raising the prospect of a NATO peacekeeping force? Putin would not accept it. He even dislikes the prospect of NATO members doing this under their own national flag…or probably under an EU flag…or a UN flag.

‘Further military planning meetings took place on 20 March, focusing on practical steps for how allied forces can contribute to long-term security arrangements for Ukraine’. I wonder how that went and what British service chiefs said that we could muster. From anarmy standpoint, it would be precious little, especually if it were required to be armoured/mechanised and enduring in nature.
