NATO Allies including the United Kingdom have agreed to launch a new multinational project aimed at strengthening defence against ballistic missile threats, the alliance stated.
The initiative was announced on 12 February 2026 following a signing ceremony at NATO Headquarters, where NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska said the projects represented a key step towards meeting commitments made at the NATO 2025 Summit in The Hague.
Under the new High Visibility Project, seven Allies, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey and the United Kingdom, will cooperate on the development, acquisition and implementation of capabilities designed to enhance ballistic missile defence. NATO said this will include work on sensors, interceptors and tactical control systems, complementing existing Allied air and missile defence capabilities.
In an announcement, the Alliance stated the initiative responds to capability targets and national operational requirements within the Alliance’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence framework. The announcement formed part of a wider package of multinational capability cooperation initiatives, including a separate High Visibility Project involving Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland and Turkey focused on drone-based deep precision strike capabilities.
NATO also said fifteen Allies will explore multinational approaches to improving airworthiness resilience and interoperability during times of crisis or conflict, potentially covering design, modification, maintenance and repair solutions, as well as procedural adaptations to sustain air operations.
In addition, Sweden has joined NATO’s Air Battle Decisive Munitions High Visibility Project, bringing participation to 17 nations. NATO said the ABDM initiative supports the acquisition of essential air-launched munitions under more favourable conditions while improving interoperability among Allies.

Big mix of NASAMS, SAMP/T, CAMM and the Turkish systems in there.
How are they supposed to work on common interceptors?
Yeah another initiative, what happened to sky shield, weren’t all the same countries in that?
Just go out and buy two Arrow 3 batteries and six SAMP/T batteries. It will cost £5 billion and the entire UK will have comprehensive cover against IMRB and partial coverage against ICBM.
We will also have an anti satellite capability.
Just stop fannying around with initiatives
The SAMP/T doesn’t cost that much.
The issue is rather how it is cued – is it via the new digital targeting web or by SAMP/T battery local radars?
We can probably do our own rather batter system using the radars we already own.
100% it will be part of a networked integrated radar system, like air traffic control is now
Not really clear what the objective is here? Theatre threats? Strategic threats?
A lot of countries, a lot of interests, a lot of politics… eventually each country will need buy or build what is relevant for its own needs but developing a NATO standard to connect all sensors and effectors together? could take many years assuming NATO is the correct organization to orchestrate this
No mention of Germany here? I thought they were the driving force of this European ABM capability?
the first sensible thing the UK has done during this entire crisis, which they, and the rest of nato, brought about by renegeing on their assurances to russia nato wouldn’t be allowed to spread eastwards, see ‘nsarchive, what gorbachev heard’
“It’s NATO’s fault Russia invaded a sovereign nation”
Sure it is Vlad, sure it is.
so if somebody promised you something, and you acted on it, you wouldn’t be aggrieved if they then reneged leaving you significantly disadvantaged
sure, people with weak minds never do, do they ?
It’s a huge assumption to state that Ukraine was going to be allowed to join NATO. Previously described as ‘brain dead’ by Macron, due to the huge difference of politics between NATO nations who would all have to agree succession, Ukraine would most likely never have gone beyond PfP status. Putin would have known this full well but it provided a fig leaf for his continued invasions of neighbouring countries. Of course, such a massive miscalculation resulted in the biggest expansion and regeneration of NATO since its creation.
exactly, nato didn’t rule it out on the basis of the previous assurances given to nato it wouldn’t be allowed, i.e. nato could well renege at their will, therefore, russia clearly has the moral high ground in this war, not against ukraine, because they didn’t give the assurances, but against nato, because they did
the implications are clear, reparations should be paid to both russia, and the ukrainian people, by nato !
