Homeless Project Scotland (HPS), which runs a soup kitchen in Glasgow seven days a week under Central Bridge on Argyle Street, is asking the Prime Minister to help them find a new building to serve hot meals to vulnerable people.

The charity is seeking a location that will allow people in need of a meal to gather 24 hours a day.

HPS is now asking the UK government if they can use one of their Ministry of Defence buildings for this purpose.

Colin McInnes, chairman of HPS, was quoted here as saying:

“We are submitting an appeal to the Prime Minister to help us find a building for our soup kitchen. The Ministry of Defence has a lot of empty buildings in Glasgow so we have asked if the MoD could give us access to one of their empty ones.

We have also appealed to the Prime Minister and asked him if he will have a telephone call with myself to talk about the crisis these people in Glasgow are facing as well as the hunger crisis across Scotland. We want him to help us find a resolution to our building problem rather than having people standing out in the cold.”

It is unclear which building would be preferred.

  1. To be fair, in said tweet he asked the following
“Message to @RishiSunak @NicolaSturgeon @LeaderGCC @GlasgowCC @AllanCasey89 we need your help to find a suitable building. We are awaiting you contacting us back.”

and then reading the replies I find this:
“”As usual you leave out the facts. The charity has been offered several buildings and refused all of them. The charity is sitting on £250000 plus to help themselves into a suitable building””

that statement is substantiated further down by others.

not knocking the work they do, but facts count. Such as the claim they feed 250k.meals a year. Yet the second but last tweet states they feed 150 people a day . Somebody asks them the correct figure as elsewhere they claim 1 million and another 130k and this was the reply:
“”People can have several meal as we serve over 6 choices every night thanks for your continued support “”

    • That is very odd.

However, there are quite large and costly issues with bringing buildings up to spec and charities are expected to keep buffer funds if they have paid employees so they can pay salaries and PAYE/NI.

    • The real question is why does such a rich country have so many people needing food banks. The government should and can fix that issue and then this story becomes a non story.

      • In the 70’s, no-one used food-banks. Why? There were no food banks.

Conditions in the 70s were, if anything, worse than they are today – higher inflation, higher unemployment, higher taxes, energy crises, three-day week, the Winter of Discontent, political sleaze and turmoil, etc. etc.

Sorry to be so cynical, but if food banks exist, there will always be people who use them.

        • True, but in 2023 it’s not just unemployed or homeless people using them and that clearly indicates an issue in the country. Although to be fair I haven’t checked the stats on usage, so not 100% sure the claims are true but seems likely with current cost of living issues.

    • Ex servicemen or not. Everyone is equal and there should be NO priority if you have served or not. Shortage of the correct facilities for the unfortunate but hey let’s send 10 challenger tanks to Ukraine. Wtf is wrong with this government.

      • Thanks for clarifying that everybody is equal.
Why you felt the need to state the obvious escapes me but I’m sure it filled a very important need for you to sound important.

        • Oops that was not meant to offend you at all. Maybe it came across a bit sharp. Sorry my little snowflake. Feeling better now?

          • Not offended in the least. Your passive aggressive projection of upset feelings and political leanings do serve to amuse me rather than cause any upset or offence.

            “Everybody is equal” jock 2023…

Thanks for the philosophy lesson, but i prefer the classics rather than inane parroting of the usual left wing versus right wing nonsense.
Politics is just theater for the unenlightened. It only exists to enrich itself.
