BAE Systems has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for new CV9035 MkIIIC vehicles, as well as associated integrated logistic support.

This new contract will provide new-build CV90s to help replenish the Swedish Army’s fleet. These new CV9035 MkIIICs will replace CV9040 vehicles donated to Ukraine by the Swedish government.

In addition, the Swedish government is procuring more new-build CV90 vehicles to expand Ukraine capabilities. The contract will provide the opportunity for other nations to join in the procurement of CV90MkIIICs.

“These new CV9035 MkIIICs will extend the capabilities of both the Swedish and Ukrainian armies and provide crews improved combat awareness, increased mobility, protection, and lethality,” said Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, managing director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, which designs and produces the CV90.

The new CV9035 MkIIIC is built to the same standard as the newest CV90 mid-life upgrade program for the Netherlands.

  1. How are the CV90s given to Ukraine performing? Anyone know as that seems to be the acid test. If a vehicle can survive in a drone and artillery saturated environment then it’s probably good enough for British army (with an APS fitted of course)

    • It’s well-liked apparently, saw action in the summer 2023 campaign. As-of December that year, no crew had been killed despite the loss of 3 vehicles and offroad mobility is seen as good- even in the famously poor conditions of Ukraine. Issues are primarily around reliability and sustainment- although that’s probably similar to CH2 from the perspective of a small vehicle fleet with limited spares.
      They like them well enough that they want to build a plant to manufacture them in Ukraine itself- which I think says they’re better than a BMP at least!
      Personally I’d rather we went with an ASCOD-derived IFV (if we ever get enough cash for another tracked IFV), to preserve commonality with the Ajax fleet. Now that we’ve ironed out the issues and found a turret that works, it’d be madness not to capitalise on that and make the most of the extra development spend.

  2. All the top kit we give them, as in Ukraine the Russian get their hands on it i’d be careful what we send. You will find the Russian military takes a big step ahead from captured tech. Not sure what the answer is as you can not expect the Ukrainians to fight with old western kit.

      • I know this is my whole point by giving Ukraine what it needs to fight, in a few things we giving up our lead in weapons. It is for others brighter than me to judge if its a wise move.
        Javlin, NLAW, 120mm AT rounds, composite armour, Abrams chobham armour Sky Shadow. Radios and the lastest French comms and sights on the AMX 10, etc

  3. Uk should procure the cv90 as well as sweden, to fill gap of Ajax failure..!!! And boxer too to help with NATO integration and standardised NATO equipment..mod must stop dithering over procurement as this helps nobody..just get the stuff and move on..
