A woman from Stratford has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years for planning to travel to Afghanistan with her children to join the terrorist group Daesh (also known as ISIS), according to an update from Warwickshire Police on 10 April 2025.

Farishta Jami, aged 36, was found guilty by a jury in February of two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorism, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. She was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court.

According to evidence presented in court, Jami intended to travel to Afghanistan to “martyr herself” and had saved £1,200 to purchase one-way flights for herself and her children. She had also researched weapons, including how to assemble and disassemble an AK-47 rifle.

Police searching her home discovered cash, SIM cards, and mobile devices hidden in a bag beside her bed, and found she had attempted to conceal passports.

Authorities said Jami shared graphic extremist material online and participated in pro-Daesh chat groups from September 2022 to January 2024. She also served as an administrator for multiple groups — some with more than 700 members — distributing propaganda and instructional videos on making explosive devices, reportedly to demonstrate her commitment to the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a regional affiliate of Daesh.

Superintendent Darren Webster, Head of Specialist Operations at Warwickshire Police, stated: “This was a complex case interlinking terrorism and serious criminal offences, and we welcome the result.” He added: “Jami’s actions had the potential for real world implications and the harm they could have caused cannot be underestimated.”

The case was handled in cooperation with Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands, and police urged the public to report extremist activity.

“If you know of anyone who is viewing or posting extreme content online, please report this,” said Webster. “Reporting won’t ruin lives, but it could save them.”
