Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) has completed a port visit to Alexandria, Egypt, as part of ongoing operations to strengthen regional partnerships and promote maritime security in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to NATO.

The task group, currently deployed under Operation Noble Shield, visited the Egyptian port from 13 to 16 October as part of its focus on NATO’s southern flank.

The group, commanded by Rear Admiral Francesco Iavazzo of the Italian Navy, includes flagship ITS Carlo Bergamini (F590), TCG Barbaros (F244) from Türkiye, and HMCS St. John’s (F340) from Canada.

During the visit, NATO personnel hosted local officials and representatives of the Egyptian Navy aboard Carlo Bergamini, took part in cultural and community activities, and conducted logistical resupply before returning to sea. The visit was held within the framework of NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue, a long-standing partnership initiative aimed at building cooperative security and mutual understanding between the Alliance and regional partners. Egypt has been a member of this framework for nearly 30 years.

Following their departure from Alexandria, SNMG2 ships conducted a Passing Exercise (PASSEX) with the Egyptian Navy. The drills included communication and manoeuvring exercises, protection against asymmetric threats, and interoperability training. NATO said the exercises demonstrated a shared commitment to cooperative maritime security and maintaining freedom of navigation in the Mediterranean.

“Our visit to Alexandria reaffirmed the value of partnership and cooperation in ensuring peace and stability across the Mediterranean,” said Rear Admiral Iavazzo. “Through Operation Noble Shield, we continue to demonstrate NATO’s commitment to maritime security and freedom of navigation. NATO’s defensive posture is expressed through continuous and visible presence, showing cohesion, determination and attention to the southern flank.”
