NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe has paid tribute to Admiral Sir Keith Blount as he prepares to leave his post as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe in March.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Brussels, General Alexus Grynkewich highlighted Blount’s role in strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence posture during a period of heightened security pressure. “Sir Keith has done a phenomenal job, relentless in his pursuit of enhancing our deterrence and collective defence,” Grynkewich said, adding that his contribution had been felt across NATO’s operational command structure.

He noted that Blount’s departure would be keenly felt within Allied Command Operations. “SHAPE and all of Allied Command Operations will miss his steady hand and his quintessentially British sense of humour,” he said. Grynkewich also offered personal thanks to the Royal Navy officer, saying, “I want to thank him for his leadership and friendship, and wish him all the best in retirement.”

Blount, who has served as DSACEUR since July 2023, will be succeeded by Air Chief Marshal Sir John Stringer, who has been appointed to the role from March 2026. The appointment marks the first time since 1984 that a Royal Air Force officer has held the position, and only the third time in the Alliance’s history.

Confirming the transition, Grynkewich said NATO was well placed for continuity. “Thankfully, we are incredibly fortunate to have Air Chief Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer selected to take over the role when Sir Keith departs in March,” he said.

He described Stringer as bringing “a wealth of experience and credibility,” noting his most recent role as Deputy Commander of Allied Air Command. “I look forward to continuing to focus on warfighting readiness and strengthening our deterrence as Johnny steps into this essential role,” Grynkewich added.

The Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe post is always held by a British officer, reflecting the UK’s central role within NATO’s command structure and its long standing NATO first approach.

  1. Truly the pinnacle of every career British officer, getting praised by his American boss.

This is why we have so many gaps in the armed forces and so much dependence on the US.
