The Ministry of Defence has issued a contract award notice for the purchase of additional Threod CATA launchers to support the British Army’s emerging one-way effector (OWE) capability under the ASGARD programme.

The direct award contract, valued at £4,996,500 excluding VAT (£5,995,800 including VAT), has been awarded to Estonia-based Threod Systems AS and will run from 2 March 2026 until 31 March 2027. A standstill period is in place until 25 February, with the earliest contract signature date listed as 2 March.

According to the notice, a Threod CATA launcher was first procured through ASGARD in financial year 2024-25 for integration and trials with the DART250 one-way effector. The MOD said that throughout 2025 the launcher underwent mobility, safety and launch trials with the Army Trials Unit and suppliers, with the trials also demonstrating interoperability with another Army OWE. Following what the MOD described as successful testing, the launcher has been requested by other defence departments for future OWE trials.

The MOD said additional CATA launchers are required to equip initial Field Army OWE detachments in order to meet minimum deployable capability, provide capacity for training and trials, and ensure resilience for deployed operations. It added that the Threod system is currently the only proven launcher capable of supporting both ASGARD and other OWE projects, describing it as the only common interoperable solution across Defence one-way effector programmes.

The contract includes options allowing further purchases while the agreement remains valid, including additional launchers, spares, and associated support and training packages.
