NATO and China have held the ninth round of their annual Military Staff Talks at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, bringing together senior officers from both sides to discuss security issues and areas of mutual interest.
The meeting on 24 March was opened by Lieutenant General Remigijus Baltrėnas, Director General of NATO’s International Military Staff, with discussions led on the Alliance side by Major General Eray Üngüder. China was represented by Major General Guo Hongtao of the People’s Liberation Army’s Office of International Military Cooperation.
Talks covered NATO’s role, the PLA’s ongoing modernisation, and the wider international security environment. Both sides also exchanged views on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, alongside broader strategic challenges.
The engagement forms part of ongoing contacts between NATO and China across both military and civilian channels, aimed at maintaining a degree of transparency and communication despite wider geopolitical tensions.
NATO has said such discussions are intended to support understanding and safeguard Alliance security interests, even as differences persist on key issues.
